Popular Osaka train station to introduce tourist only platform

Nankai Electric Railway, a major private railway operator in the Kansai region of Japan, has announced plans to establish a platform intended for use solely by tourists.
Namba Station is one of Osaka’s major transportation hubs and will soon be home to the new platform, which will be named “Platform 0”.

The new platform is expected to debut alongside the launch of a new tourist train service between Osaka’s Namba Station and Koya’s Gokurakubashi Station that is planned to enter operation in spring 2026.
Nankai sees the new platform as a way to enhance the travel experience for visitors exploring the areas along its lines, particularly those heading to Mount Koya (Koyasan).

Namba Station is a key railway station in Osaka, serving as the terminal for several Nankai lines, including the Nankai Main Line and the Nankai Koya Line, which provides direct access to Koyasan.
The station is also a significant interchange point with other railway and subway lines, making it a busy gateway for both commuters and tourists.

The creation of “Platform 0” aims to provide a unique and exclusive starting point for journeys on the new tourist train, distinguishing it from regular commuter services.
The station currently has two Platform 1’s, one used for arrivals and departures and one solely used for disembarking passengers, which will now be repurposed as “Platform 0”.

Nankai Electric Railway plans extensive beautification and renovation work to transform this space into a premium boarding area.
The design concept for “Platform 0” has been described as “the vibrations of Namba will spread to the areas along the line and resonate with the charms of each region”.

This will be achieved through thoughtful incorporation of guiding lighting, a curved architectural design, and the strategic use of colors and materials that reflect the unique characteristics and attractions of the destinations along the Nankai lines.
The objective is to craft a high-quality, memorable space that serves as an inviting “starting point” for regional exploration.

While details about the new tourist train itself are still emerging, Nankai Electric Railway has previously indicated plans to introduce a luxurious tourist train, which will replace its existing “Tenku” sightseeing train that runs on the Koya Line.

The new train is expected to offer an enhanced travel experience, featuring luxurious interiors, comfortable seating, panoramic windows, and services like onboard attendants and meals prepared with local ingredients.

The train will primarily cater to affluent tourists and those seeking a more stylish way to travel to destinations like Koyasan, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the spiritual headquarters of Shingon Buddhism, renowned for its ancient temples and serene atmosphere.
The journey to Koyasan via the Nankai Koya Line and the Koyasan Cable Car is a significant part of the tourist experience.

To facilitate the construction and beautification of Platform 0, the “disembarking only” Platform 1 will be temporarily closed from August 2nd, 2025.
During this period, trains on the Nankai Koya Line will temporarily consolidate all their operations onto the “arrival/departure” Platform 1.
This temporary adjustment is designed to minimize disruption while allowing for the significant upgrades necessary for the new dedicated tourist platform.

The establishment of “Platform 0” at Namba Station is part of a growing trend among Japanese railway companies to transform train journeys themselves into part of the travel experience, rather than merely a means of transportation.
This move is expected to further enhance the appeal of the Nankai railway network and the destinations it serves, drawing more domestic and international visitors to the diverse cultural and natural attractions of the Kansai region.
