Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo to Reopen Ahead of Schedule This August Following Fatal Attack

The Pokémon Company has confirmed that Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo and Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Café will officially reopen this August, following several months of temporary closure.

Pokémon Center stores are the franchise’s official retail locations, offering exclusive merchandise, collectibles, and seasonal events, while Pikachu Sweets by Pokémon Café serves Pokémon-themed desserts and drinks inspired by the series’ most iconic characters.

Both locations are situated inside Sunshine City in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district and have remained closed since late March after a tragic incident at Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo resulted in the death of a female employee in her 20s.

Following the incident, The Pokémon Company said its immediate priority was supporting the police investigation while also focusing on the physical and mental wellbeing of its employees, leading to the temporary closure of both stores.

Ahead of the reopening, Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo has undergone partial renovations, with additional measures being introduced to strengthen employee safety and create a more reassuring environment for both staff and visitors.

The company has also confirmed that entry restrictions will be in place for a period after the stores reopen, with further details on how guests will be able to enter expected to be announced at a later date.

Earlier this year, The Pokémon Company revealed that it was preparing to reopen the stores at the same location, with September initially expected to be the target timeframe before the reopening date was brought forward to August 24.

The company has noted that the reopening schedule could still change if circumstances require it.

Visitors should also be aware that Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo will not host any of the promotional campaigns or special events taking place at other Pokémon Center locations during August.
