Netflix Enlists Hollywood Heavyweights to Create Live-Action Persona Series

Netflix is moving ahead with a live-action television adaptation of Atlus’ acclaimed Persona video game franchise, marking the latest major gaming series to make the jump to streaming television.
While development has now been confirmed, it has not yet been revealed whether the series will adapt a specific Persona title or create a new story inspired by the long-running franchise.

Unlike many game series, each numbered Persona entry features its own standalone cast, setting and storyline, giving the production several possible directions for its live-action debut.
Christopher Monfette has signed on as executive producer, showrunner and writer for the project, bringing experience from productions including Star Trek: Picard, 12 Monkeys, 9-1-1 and Vision Quest.

The production team also includes executive producers Shawn Levy, Robert Atwood, Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson, while Sega’s Toru Nakahara will represent the franchise as an executive producer.
Developed by Atlus and owned by Sega, Persona began life as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series before establishing itself as one of the most celebrated role-playing game franchises in the industry.

The original Persona debuted on the original PlayStation in 1996, and the series has since earned worldwide acclaim through its distinctive blend of dungeon exploration, turn-based combat, social simulation and stylish presentation.
The franchise continues to receive major releases, with Persona 3 Reload launching in February 2024 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC and Steam, while also being available through Xbox Game Pass on release day.

Persona 3 Reload later expanded to Nintendo Switch 2 with a release in October.
The next major title, Persona 4 Revival, is scheduled to launch on February 18, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Game Pass and Steam.

Persona 4 Revival is a full remake of the original Persona 4, which first launched for PlayStation 2 in 2008 before receiving the enhanced Persona 4 Golden edition for PlayStation Vita in 2011.

Persona 4 also inspired several spin-off titles, including Persona 4 Arena, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and Persona 4: Dancing All Night.
Persona 5 became another landmark success for the franchise after debuting in Japan on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 in September 2016 before launching in North America in April 2017, featuring animated sequences produced by Production I.G.

An expanded edition, Persona 5 Royal, arrived in Japan in October 2019 before launching across the Americas and Europe in March 2020, later making its way to Nintendo Switch in October 2022.
Earlier this month, Atlus also confirmed that Persona 6 is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud and PC via Steam, demonstrating that the franchise continues to expand alongside its upcoming move into live-action television.
