MTG Reveals New Hatsune Miku Secret Lair Commander Deck
Image by Charlotte DavisMagic: The Gathering is expanding its Hatsune Miku crossover into a complete ready-to-play release, pairing exclusive Japanese artwork with a green and white strategy built around life gain, creature tokens, and an increasingly crowded battlefield.
Hatsune Miku began as music software released by Crypton Future Media on August 31, 2007, allowing creators to produce songs by entering their own lyrics and melodies before the character grew into a global virtual singer and community-driven cultural phenomenon.
Officially titled “Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku,” the new product is the first Universes Beyond Commander deck released through Secret Lair and comes with everything needed to begin playing immediately.
Commander is Magic’s popular multiplayer format in which each player uses a 100-card deck led by a legendary commander, with the remaining cards built around that character’s colors, abilities and overall strategy.
The deck continues a partnership that began with the Sakura Superstar Secret Lair in 2024 before expanding through the Digital Sensation, Electric Entourage and Winter Diva drops, which presented Miku and the other Piapro Characters across a range of reprinted Magic cards.
Designed by Studio X game designer Carmen Klomparens, the new deck moves beyond those smaller collectible drops by creating a full Selesnya-colored Commander experience that can be played straight out of the box.
Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice leads the deck under the new character title “Miku, Song of the People,” with original artwork by KEI, the illustrator responsible for Hatsune Miku’s first software package.
The commander rewards players whenever another creature enters under their control by providing additional life, while Trostani’s populate ability can copy an existing creature token to keep the performance growing.
Archangel of Thune strengthens the entire team whenever its controller gains life, while Voice of the Blessed and Ajani’s Pridemate can grow into increasingly dangerous attackers as the deck’s life total rises.
Token-focused cards including Rhys the Redeemed, Growing Ranks, Grand Crescendo, Ghalta and Mavren and Gruff Triplets work alongside Trostani’s populate ability to increase the size of the board surprisingly quickly.
Mirari’s Wake boosts the deck’s creatures while doubling the mana produced by its lands, and Finale of Devastation can either search for an important creature or turn into a powerful late-game finisher once enough mana is available.
Aetherflux Reservoir gives the deck a dramatic life-based win condition, while Halo Fountain offers another route to victory for players who manage to create and tap a large enough army.
Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger receives another major Hatsune Miku treatment under the name “Miku, the Complete Performer,” presenting a much darker interpretation of the virtual singer than the brighter artwork found elsewhere in the deck.
Trostani remains the supplied deck’s legal commander, as using the mono-green Vorinclex in the command zone would require removing every white card and rebuilding the deck around a different color identity.
The deck does not introduce any mechanically unique Hatsune Miku cards, instead using existing Magic cards with new names or artwork alongside carefully selected reprints that support its life-gain and token strategy.
Its 100 cards include 12 foil borderless reprints with new artwork, seven foil borderless Plains, seven foil borderless Forests and 74 non-foil reprints.
The 12 featured foil cards are Trostani, Selesnya’s Voice, Archangel of Thune, Halo Fountain, Grand Crescendo, Shalai, Voice of Plenty, Song of the Worldsoul, Soul Warden, Break Down, Cultivate, Finale of Devastation, Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger and Bountiful Promenade.
Together with the newly illustrated Plains and Forest designs, these cards create 14 different borderless art treatments showing Miku in a variety of outfits, performances and character-focused scenes.
The artwork was created by Japanese illustrators including KEI, 八三/HASSAN and さいとうなおき/NAOKI SAITO, giving the deck a visual identity that remains closely connected to the creative community surrounding Hatsune Miku.
The Plains show Miku performing beneath bright blue skies, while the Forest design surrounds her with animals and natural scenery, with seven foil copies of each land included to make them a prominent part of the finished deck.
Of the 74 non-foil cards, 72 use the Planeswalker stamp previously seen across Mystery Booster 2 and earlier Secret Lair Commander releases, while Growing Ranks and Phyrexian Processor appear as standard unstamped reprints.
Ten non-foil double-sided tokens are also included to represent the deck’s Angels, Citizens, Horses, Vampires, Phyrexian Minions, Treasures and other generated creatures, although these use artwork from previous Magic releases rather than new Hatsune Miku illustrations.
The package will be completed by a dedicated deck box and an oversized display version of Miku, Song of the People, with Wizards noting that the display commander itself cannot be used in sanctioned play.
Wizards is introducing a special 24-hour ordering system for the release, guaranteeing fulfillment for every order completed within the designated window rather than ending the sale as soon as the initial stock sells out.
The experimental approach was introduced partly in response to demand surrounding the Goblin Storm Commander deck, with Secret Lair considering similar ordering windows for other complete playable products if the new system proves successful.
Secret Lair Commander Deck: Hatsune Miku is priced at $149.99 (approx. $150 USD / £111 GBP).
The deck will be sold exclusively through the official Secret Lair store from 9:00 AM PT on August 10 until 8:59 AM PT on August 11, 2026, with every order placed during that 24-hour period set to be fulfilled.
A limited quantity will be available for immediate fulfillment, while additional North American orders placed after that initial supply is allocated are currently expected to ship during May 2027.
