Mobile Suit Archives: How the Devil Gundam Became One of Gundam’s Most Dangerous Machines

The JDG-00X “Devil Gundam” was the central threat of Mobile Fighter G Gundam, possessing extraordinary abilities that allowed it to regenerate from damage, create its own army, and evolve into increasingly powerful forms.

First airing in 1994, Mobile Fighter G Gundam marked a major turning point for the franchise as the first Gundam television series set outside the established Universal Century timeline, introducing the alternative Future Century setting and a very different approach to mobile suit combat.

Set in a future where much of humanity had moved into space colonies, the series replaced traditional large-scale warfare with the Gundam Fight, an international martial arts tournament held every four years in which nations competed using powerful mobile fighters to determine who would govern the Earth Sphere.

The story followed Domon Kasshu, Neo Japan’s representative in the 13th Gundam Fight, who entered the tournament while searching for his missing older brother and uncovering the truth behind the mysterious Devil Gundam.

Originally developed in Neo Japan as the “Ultimate Gundam”, the machine was the creation of Dr. Raizo Kasshu, the father of series protagonist Domon Kasshu, with assistance from his eldest son, Kyoji.
Its intended purpose was to restore Earth’s devastated environment, which had suffered extensive damage from humanity’s activities and the conflicts associated with the Gundam Fight tournaments.
To accomplish this, the Ultimate Gundam incorporated advanced nanotechnology built around three extraordinary capabilities: self-regeneration, self-proliferation, and self-evolution.

The project took a disastrous turn when Kyoji attempted to prevent the machine from falling into the hands of Neo Japan’s military, fleeing to Earth with the Ultimate Gundam before a malfunction transformed it into the Devil Gundam.
What began as a mission to restore the planet became corrupted, with the machine eventually identifying humanity itself as the greatest threat to Earth’s survival.
Much of the Devil Gundam’s incredible power came from microscopic nanomachines known as DG Cells, which could repair damaged components, reproduce and transform mechanical structures, and even infect other mobile fighters and living organisms.

Through these abilities, the Devil Gundam created the Death Army, a seemingly endless force of mass-produced mobile fighters that served as its soldiers, alongside enormous serpentine weapons known as Gundam Heads.
As the machine continued to evolve, its appearance changed dramatically, progressing from an enormous arthropod-like mechanical body into increasingly monstrous forms that combined traditional Gundam features with multiple limbs, enormous claws, and heavily armed defensive structures.
Powerful beam weaponry and devastating Devil Fingers, enormous mechanical hands capable of overwhelming enemy mobile fighters, made the Devil Gundam a formidable opponent even without its extraordinary regenerative capabilities.

The ability to repair and evolve was arguably its greatest weapon, allowing the machine to recover from defeats that would have permanently destroyed almost any other Gundam.
Beyond its destructive capabilities, the Devil Gundam played a central role in Domon Kasshu’s personal journey throughout G Gundam, with the Neo Japan fighter initially searching for his older brother Kyoji, whom he believed had stolen the Ultimate Gundam and brought disaster upon their family.
The truth was considerably more tragic, as Kyoji had become trapped within the Devil Gundam and was being used as its biological core, supplying the living energy needed to sustain its evolution.

Throughout the series, Domon and his allies repeatedly confronted the Devil Gundam, including major battles in Shinjuku, the Guiana Highlands, and Neo Hong Kong, where its continued evolution made it an increasingly dangerous opponent.
The machine reached its ultimate transformation during the series’ final conflict, absorbing the enormous Neo Japan space colony to become the Colony Devil Gundam and threatening the entire planet.
With Rain Mikamura forcibly incorporated as its new biological core, Domon was forced to confront the machine one final time in his God Gundam, ultimately rescuing Rain before the two destroyed the Devil Gundam together.

Few enemies in Gundam have matched the Devil Gundam’s combination of monstrous mechanical design, terrifying technology, and seemingly limitless potential for destruction.
Its story also gave G Gundam one of its most tragic ideas: a Gundam created to restore life to a dying planet ultimately became a machine that threatened to destroy the very humanity responsible for creating it.

The Devil Gundam’s imposing design has also made it an interesting subject for official Gundam merchandise, with Bandai releasing several Gunpla kits and collectible figures based on its various forms.
One of its earliest appearances was the original “1/144 Devil Gundam” Gunpla kit released in August 1994, which recreated the machine’s final form and incorporated interchangeable parts allowing it to transform into a Gundam Head-inspired Mobile Armor configuration.

The kit also included articulated joints and separately molded components for its enormous lower body, capturing the complex design of one of G Gundam’s largest and most intimidating enemies.
Bandai subsequently recreated the machine’s original arthropod-like appearance with the “Mobile Suit in Action!! JDG-00X Devil Gundam (First Form)” figure in November 2002, which also included an alternative lower body that allowed collectors to display it in a more traditional humanoid Mobile Fighter configuration.

Another interpretation followed in February 2003 with the “BB Senshi No. 245 Devil Gundam” Gunpla kit, which recreated its appearance in the popular super-deformed style, complete with articulated arms, shoulders, legs, waist, and head.

For collectors interested in recreating the Devil Gundam’s army, Bandai also developed the HG 1/144 Death Beast, a Premium Bandai-exclusive Gunpla kit based on the four-legged variation of the Death Army mobile fighter, which received another US pre-order release in September 2026.

Fans looking to recreate its final confrontation with Domon can also consider the RG 1/144 God Gundam, a highly articulated Real Grade Gunpla kit based on the Devil Gundam’s ultimate opponent, capable of performing elaborate martial arts poses and recreating its signature attacks.
