McDonald’s Japan To Release Kinoko no Yama x Takenoko no Sato McFlurry

A historic truce has been called in one of Japan’s fiercest culinary debates to create a new limited-edition dessert.
McDonald’s Japan has announced the release of the “McFlurry Kinoko no Yama and Takenoko no Sato,” the first menu item in history to feature both rival chocolates simultaneously.

For decades, Japanese consumers have been divided into two passionate camps regarding Meiji’s popular chocolate snacks: the “Kinoko no Yama” (Mushroom Mountain) faction and the “Takenoko no Sato” (Bamboo Shoot Village) faction.

These two brands are often pitted against one another in “general elections” and popularity contests, with fans fiercely debating the merits of the mushroom’s crisp cracker stem versus the bamboo shoot’s crumbly cookie base.

This new collaboration sets aside that rivalry by combining both confections into a single cup.
The dessert features the fast-food chain’s signature rich vanilla soft serve blended with the chocolate snacks.

Notably, the “Kinoko no Yama” and “Takenoko no Sato” pieces are not crushed but are mixed into the ice cream in their entirety.
This preparation method preserves the original shapes and textures of the chocolates, allowing customers to enjoy the specific crunch of the mushroom and the cookie texture of the bamboo shoot in a single bite.

To further enhance the flavor profile, the soft serve is topped with two different types of chocolate sauces.
These sauces are formulated to have different melting speeds and textures, adding a layer of complexity to the mix of cold ice cream and crunchy biscuits.

The “McFlurry Kinoko no Yama and Takenoko no Sato” is priced starting at 370 yen (approx. $2.50 USD / £2.00 GBP).
The dessert will be available at McDonald’s locations nationwide for a limited time.
Sales are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, January 21.
