Mawaru Penguindrum Set to Return as 15th Anniversary Projects Announced

The acclaimed 2011 anime Mawaru Penguindrum has announced the start of celebrations for its 15th anniversary, confirming a year-long lineup of special projects, including brand-new artwork, free online streaming events and the return of its theatrical films.
Directed by Kunihiko Ikuhara, Mawaru Penguindrum first premiered in July 2011 and became one of the most distinctive anime of its era thanks to its symbolic storytelling, unforgettable visual style and mysterious narrative centered around the enigmatic “Penguindrum.”.

The series also drew widespread attention for its memorable character designs by Lily Hoshino, its surreal Crystal World sequences and a soundtrack that became one of the show’s defining features during its original broadcast.
To commemorate the milestone, a brand-new 15th anniversary illustration created by original character designer Lily Hoshino has now been unveiled, giving fans fresh artwork to mark the occasion.

Beginning on July 17, the complete television series will also be made available to watch for free on YouTube through a limited-time streaming event split across four separate releases.

Each new streaming debut will launch as a YouTube Premiere, allowing viewers to watch together in real time while chatting live with fellow fans as the episodes become available.
The celebration will also see the two-part theatrical compilation RE of the PENGUINDRUM return to cinemas through a special revival screening campaign.

Released in 2022 to mark the franchise’s 10th anniversary, the RE of the PENGUINDRUM films reconstructed all 24 television episodes while introducing newly created animation that expanded the original story.

Further details regarding the theatrical re-release, including screening dates and participating cinemas, will be announced shortly.

Additional anniversary projects are also planned throughout the year, with future announcements set to be shared through the official Mawaru Penguindrum website.
