Jujutsu Kaisen’s sequel manga kills off two fan favorite characters in its first chapter

A new sequel series to the hit manga Jujutsu Kaisen has begun, and it opens with a shocking and heartbreaking reveal for fans who may have been hoping to see some of their favorite characters return.
The new manga, titled Modulo (also referred to as Mojuro), is set 68 years after the conclusion of the “Culling Game” arc from the original series.
Modulo is an official spin-off with a story by the original Jujutsu Kaisen creator, Gege Akutami, and features new artwork by the artist Yuji Iwasaki.
In a comment, Akutami stated that he had previously turned down offers for spin-offs, but that this new project felt like an opportunity to expand the world and delve deeper into its setting in a new era.
The new series is planned to be a short-term serialization, running for approximately six months and being collected into about three volumes.
The new story features a new generation of Jujutsu Sorcerers, focusing on the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki Zen’in.
The very first chapter of the new story reveals that a particular fan-favorite special grade sorcerer has passed away from old age.
The manga’s opening pages depict the funeral of Yuta Okkotsu, and it is also revealed that Maki has also passed away at some point before him.
The series’ first chapter also introduces a new protagonist named Maru, who is from Alien race known as the Simurian, and reveals more details about Yuta and Maki’s grandchildren, Yuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu.
This immediately establishes a new, far-future era for the world of Jujutsu Sorcerers, and confirms the eventual fates of two of the original series’ most beloved characters.
The first chapter of Modulo debuted in the 41st issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine and can now be read online via the Shonen Jump app as of Sunday, the 7th of September, 2025
