Highly sought-after PG UNLEASHED RX-78-2 Gundam to be re-released
A new wave of pre-orders has opened for what is considered the pinnacle of Gunpla engineering, the “PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam.”
The model kit is a recreation of the iconic mobile suit from the original 1979 television series, Mobile Suit Gundam.
The original Gundam series revolutionized the mecha anime genre by introducing the “Real Robot” concept, treating the giant machines not as superheroes, but as realistic weapons of war in a complex military conflict.
The RX-78-2 Gundam was the prototype mobile suit piloted by the show’s protagonist, Amuro Ray, and has since become a Japanese cultural icon and the enduring symbol of the entire Gundam franchise.
The “PG UNLEASHED” kit features the most advanced technology in Gunpla, including over 90 points of articulation, the most in the line’s history.
Gunpla, a portmanteau of “Gundam plastic model,” is a vast line of model kits, and the “Perfect Grade” (PG) line represents the highest tier of these kits, featuring a large 1/60 scale and extreme detail.
The “PG UNLEASHED” is a further evolution of this concept, designed to offer builders a simulated experience of constructing a real mobile suit from the ground up through a phased assembly process.
The “PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam” has a full-body hatch-open gimmick, allowing builders to display the intricate inner mechanics after completion.
An included LED unit provides lighting for the head and chest, and a separate, minuscule LED unit is embedded in the hilt of the beam saber, allowing the blade to light up with a realistic, glowing gradation effect.
Alongside the main kit, Bandai is also re-releasing the companion “PG UNLEASHED 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam Clear Color Body.”
This is a separate, optional expansion set that provides a full set of transparent external armor parts.
Using this set allows the meticulously detailed internal frame and LED features of the main kit to be showcased even after assembly is complete.
The re-release of the main PG UNLEASHED RX-78-2 Gundam kit is priced at ¥27,500, whilst the separate Clear Color Body expansion set is priced at ¥5,720.
Both items are being sold in limited quantities through the Premium Bandai online store, with pre-orders closing once the production limit is reached.
Bandai began accepting reservations for the restock on the 10th of July, with both products scheduled to be shipped to customers in August 2025.
