Gundam Wing’s Pilots Become Train Conductors for New Official Bullet Train Travel Collab
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and JR Central have officially announced a new Shinkansen collaboration that will see Heero, Relena, Duo, Trowa, Quatre and Wufei become train conductors for a limited time starting this Fall.
Called “OPERATION TOKAIDO,” the collaboration forms part of JR Central’s “Oshi Tabi” initiative, which uses anime, games, and other popular franchises to encourage fans to travel along Japan’s Tokaido Shinkansen route while unlocking exclusive content tied to their journey.
Gundam Wing originally aired in Japan in 1995 and follows five young Gundam pilots sent to Earth as part of Operation Meteor, with Heero Yuy, Duo Maxwell, Trowa Barton, Quatre Raberba Winner and Chang Wufei becoming caught up in a conflict between the colonies, OZ and the Romefeller Foundation.
Relena Darlian also plays a central role throughout the series, with her relationship with Heero and involvement in the political side of the conflict making her one of Gundam Wing’s most recognizable characters outside the five pilots.
The new collaboration arrives during Gundam Wing’s ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations, which have also brought a seven-disc soundtrack collection covering music from across the anime, confirmation of a new Gundam Wing visual project and a new “MGSD Wing Gundam Zero EW [Structural Color Coating/Black]” Gunpla kit, which introduces Bandai’s new color-shifting finish to one of the series’ most recognizable Mobile Suits.
For “OPERATION TOKAIDO,” new artwork has been created specifically for the campaign that sees all five Gundam pilots and Relena dressed in conductor-inspired uniforms, which will feature on promotional materials and exclusive collectibles.
Passengers riding the Tokaido Shinkansen will be able to access two exclusive Gundam Wing voice programs through a dedicated campaign website, with different recordings available depending on which section of the route they are traveling.
One voice program will be available between Tokyo and Nagoya, while a second will unlock between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka, giving fans a reason to experience different content across the two major sections of the journey.
Listening to the special voice content will also generate a digital ride certificate that can be exchanged for one randomly selected metallic card from a collection of six designs.
The cards feature the newly created conductor artwork and can be collected from either EDITH ANIME SHOP in Osaka or Gamers Nagoya, although fans won’t be able to choose which design they receive.
JR Central is also spreading the collaboration across six major Nozomi stops, with Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Nagoya, Kyoto and Shin-Osaka each offering a different downloadable smartphone wallpaper when visitors check in using the campaign website.
Each station is tied to a specific Gundam Wing character, with Heero available at Tokyo, Trowa at Shinagawa, Wufei at Shin-Yokohama, Relena at Nagoya, Quatre at Kyoto, and Duo at Shin-Osaka.
The wallpapers don’t require passengers to collect them in a particular order, meaning fans traveling only part of the Tokaido route can still unlock the designs available at the stations they visit.
Exclusive “OPERATION TOKAIDO” collaboration merchandise featuring the new campaign artwork will also be sold at EDITH ANIME SHOP and Gamers Nagoya throughout the event, although the full product lineup has yet to be revealed.
JR Central’s “Mobile Suit Gundam Wing OPERATION TOKAIDO” collaboration will run from October 20, 2026 through January 17, 2027 across the Tokaido Shinkansen route and its participating stations.
