The amusement facility operator GENDA GiGO Entertainment has announced the impending closure of one of Akihabara’s most recognizable arcades.

“GiGO Akihabara Building 1” has been a cornerstone of the Akihabara arcade scene for over three decades, standing as an icon in the district famous for its connection to anime and video game culture.

The arcade first opened its doors in October of 1992 under the name “Hi-Tech Land SEGA Shintoku.”

Over the years, as ownership and branding changed, it was known by several different names, including “Club Sega Akihabara” and “SEGA Akihabara Building 1,” before becoming part of the GiGO brand following GENDA’s acquisition of SEGA’s arcade division.

Throughout its history, the building’s prominent red facade made it a familiar landmark for both domestic and international visitors to Tokyo’s “Electric Town.”

The company stated that the closure is due to the expiration of the building’s lease agreement.

The closure of such long-standing arcades is often seen as the end of an era by the gaming community, reflecting the changing landscape of both Akihabara and the arcade industry itself.

Following the closure, a new amusement facility is planned to be opened in the same location by the company Matahari Entertainment.

GENDA GiGO Entertainment reassured patrons that its other three locations in the district, “GiGO Akihabara Buildings 2, 3, and 5,” will continue their operations as usual.

The company also stated it will cooperate with the incoming Matahari Entertainment to contribute to the continued development of Akihabara as a hub for Japanese pop culture.

Details regarding any special events leading up to the final day of operation will be posted on the arcade’s official X account.

The final day of business for GiGO Akihabara Building 1 is scheduled for Sunday, August 31st, 2025.

Despite the closure of this famous arcade, GiGO continues to open new arcades in Japan, such as the “GiGO NU Chayamachi” arcade, which opened in February within the “NU Chayamachi” mall in Osaka’s stylish Chayamachi district.
