Shizukumiya Festival 2026
Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The city of Hida Takayama in Gifu Prefecture is preparing to host the annual Shizukumiya Festival, an event that has been a local tradition since 2003.
This celebration marks the completion of the latest batch of freshly brewed sake and serves as a communal prayer for a successful and prosperous harvest in the coming year.
A central feature of the festivities is a grand procession featuring a sakadarumikoshi, which is a portable shrine constructed in the shape of a sake barrel.
Energetic local participants will carry the shrine through the streets, beginning and ending their journey at the Takayama Jinya Square.
One of the most anticipated moments will take place at the Miyagawa riverbed near Miyamae Bridge, where a ritual cleansing ceremony involves participants entering the water to ward off evil spirits.
This traditional water rite is expected to be a spectacle for onlookers, enhanced by the use of hand-held fireworks that add light and sound to the spiritual event.
Visitors to Takayama Jinya Square will have the opportunity to purchase a special sacred sake known as Kami no Shizuku, which is crafted from rice grown within the region.
The square will also serve as a hub for entertainment, featuring various stage performances by local artists and a selection of food trucks offering regional culinary specialties.
While there is no cost for admission to view the parade or performances, guests are encouraged to bring currency for any food, drinks, or commemorative sake purchases.
The festival site is conveniently located for travelers, situated approximately ten minutes on foot from Takayama Station on the JR Takayama Line.
