The spiritual heart of Wakayama Prefecture is preparing for the historic Wakayama Hongu Matsuri, a traditional festival that honors the deep religious heritage of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes.
Central to the upcoming festivities is the Kumano Hongu Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of the region, where ancient rituals will be performed to ensure a bountiful harvest and the continued protection of the community.
The event is expected to feature the striking sight of portable shrines, known as mikoshi, being carried by local participants through the rugged and beautiful landscape surrounding the sacred grounds.
