Star Trek Voyager: Across the Unknown is a story-driven experience centered on the plight of the U.S.S. Voyager crew, who were famously stranded 70,000 light-years from home in the perilous Delta Quadrant.

The game tasks the player with taking the helm to manage resources, oversee the ship, and make the difficult, high-stakes decisions necessary to guide the ship and its crew back to the Alpha Quadrant.
The core of the experience revolves around “What if?” scenarios and roguelike elements, ensuring that each playthrough is a challenging new journey.

The player will be able to explore narrative paths that deviate from the show’s canon, such as if Captain Janeway had made different choices, or if the crew had decided to adopt new technology, like the highly adaptive and dangerous systems of the Borg, to enhance their chances of survival.
Players must be prepared for the consequences of their actions, as important characters may meet an early end if the situation is mishandled due to the title’s roguelike nature.

Gameplay focuses on complex vessel management and research.
As the U.S.S. Voyager begins its journey heavily damaged, players must restore destroyed rooms, secure life support, manage energy supplies, and construct essential facilities, including crew quarters and research labs, essential for the ship’s continued operation far from Federation supply lines.

Research is critical, and the player will decide which fields to expedite, from general ship upgrades to layouts that boost crew morale, all the way to exploring exotic, dangerous technology like that of the Borg.
Survival also requires continuous Exploration and Resource Acquisition in the uncharted regions of the Delta Quadrant.

Players will scan celestial bodies to locate the precious resources needed to fuel their long journey, finding points of interest and navigating a hostile environment that rewards the bold but punishes the careless.
As captain, plotting the course and defining the approach is entirely up to the player.

When diplomacy fails, the player must command the U.S.S. Voyager in Ship Combat and Away Missions.
Away teams are assembled based on the individual talents of the crew to minimize risk on planets or space facilities.

In ship combat, the player gives commands for offensive and defensive maneuvers from the bridge, targeting enemy systems and utilizing special weaponry.
Crew members’ individual skills are vital here, requiring the player to assign them to battle stations at crucial moments to maximize the ship’s combat effectiveness.
