Square Enix announces new Vivi Ornitier figure for Final Fantasy IX anniversary
Square Enix is preparing to release a new collectible figure of Vivi Ornitier, a central character from the classic role-playing game Final Fantasy IX.
This announcement arrives as part of the ongoing 25th-anniversary celebrations for the title, a game that has maintained a dedicated following since its debut on the original PlayStation.
Final Fantasy IX distinguished itself with a deliberate return to the high-fantasy worlds of the franchise’s origins, weaving a story celebrated for its emotional depth and charming art style.
The game’s aesthetic, overseen by character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, created a storybook-like world that stood in contrast to the more futuristic settings of its direct predecessors.
At the heart of that story is Vivi, a young and timid black mage whose appearance is both simple and unforgettable.
His journey from a shy, clumsy boy into a brave individual who confronts his own manufactured nature and limited lifespan is one of the most poignant character arcs in the series’ history.
Vivi’s quest for identity, his discovery of the Black Mage Village, and his philosophical questions about life and purpose have resonated deeply with players for decades.
The upcoming figure is part of Square Enix’s FORM-ISM product line, a brand focused on creating detailed, non-articulated sculptures that prioritize capturing a character’s definitive shape and presence.
This release aims to offer a fresh interpretation of the character, with a particular emphasis placed on reimagining the textures of his iconic costume.
The figure, standing at approximately 15cm (nearly 6 inches) tall, presents a detailed version of Vivi, accurately capturing the distinctive silhouette of his pointed hat and the folds in his blue coat.
It serves as a physical tribute to one of the game’s most emotionally impactful characters, designed to evoke the memory of his story.
The FORM-ISM Vivi Ornitier is priced at 6,930 yen (approx. $47.43 USD / £34.87 GBP) and is set for release on the 29th of November.
Pre-orders for the item are now open through the official Square Enix e-STORE, alongside other anniversary merchandise such as a life-size recreation of Vivi’s hat.
