Spike Chunsoft Confirms Danganronpa 2×2 Delayed Until 2027
Spike Chunsoft and developer Gemdrops announced during an Anime Expo panel that Danganronpa 2×2 will now launch in early 2027 following a delay from its previously planned 2026 release window, while also sharing new gameplay details and a message from the game’s producer.
Danganronpa is Spike Chunsoft’s acclaimed murder mystery adventure series, combining visual novel storytelling, investigation gameplay and high-stakes class trials where students must expose the culprit behind each killing to survive.
Danganronpa 2×2 revisits Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair while introducing substantial new content designed to give both returning fans and newcomers a fresh way to experience the story.
Players will be able to choose between two complete game modes, the first of which is “Original Mode,” a retelling of the story of the 2012 release with enhanced visuals and an updated presentation created for modern gaming platforms.
Alongside it is the brand-new “Slayhem Mode,” which features an entirely different storyline inspired by Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.
Rather than simply retelling the original story, Slayhem Mode begins with a new incident that leads to different victims, culprits and murder methods throughout the game.
According to the development team, Slayhem Mode also contains approximately 20 percent more content than the Original Mode.
Exploration has also been significantly redesigned through the introduction of a fully 3D World Map.
Unlike the side-scrolling map used in the original game, players can now freely explore the island in three dimensions or instantly fast travel to previously visited destinations.
Viewing the map from a first-person perspective also helps emphasize the tropical atmosphere of the island setting.
Character portraits have likewise received newly illustrated artwork, giving the returning cast an updated visual presentation throughout the game.
Producer Shohei Sakakibara confirmed that development is continuing steadily despite the revised schedule and said the team decided additional development time was necessary to deliver the best possible experience, with a more specific release date to be announced in the future.
The previously announced Standard Edition will be joined by the Psycho Tropical Vacation Package, priced at $139.99 (approx. ¥20,200 / £102 GBP), which includes a copy of the game, a clamshell-style collector’s box, Kidrobot Psycho Tropical Monokuma and Monomi figures, an RSVLTS reversible Psycho Tropical bucket hat and the Danganronpa 2×2 original soundtrack.
Danganronpa 2×2 is now scheduled to launch in early 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam, with the Standard Edition and Psycho Tropical Vacation Package set to release alongside one another on an as yet unconfirmed date.
