Shittenoji Doya Doya Festival
Last Updated on May 6, 2025

Event Overview
The Shittenoji Doya Doya Festival, famously known as Osaka’s Naked Festival, marks the culmination of 14 days of post-New Year worship at Shittenoji Temple.

Teams of high school students with historical ties to the temple participate in a spirited contest. Clad only in loincloths, they brave icy water dousing while shouting “doya doya” – the Japanese onomatopoeia for thundering footsteps. This creates a highly charged atmosphere of competition.

Spectators can witness this unique event from the temple grounds, but early arrival is crucial to secure a good viewing spot. The festival typically commences around 2:30 p.m.
