Sanrio’s Sonic the Hedgehog collab reveals two more character pairings

SEGA has revealed additional character pairings for the ongoing collaboration between their popular short animation “SONIC & FRIENDS” and Sanrio.
This collaboration brings together two immensely popular Japanese franchises’ global fanbases.

Sonic the Hedgehog, SEGA’s flagship character, debuted in 1991 and has since become a cornerstone of video game culture.

“SONIC & FRIENDS” is a series of animated shorts featuring cute chibi-style versions of characters from the Sonic universe.
Sanrio, established in 1960, is celebrated worldwide for its “kawaii” (cute) characters, with Hello Kitty being its most famous creation.

The initial announcement of this crossover delighted fans by revealing Sonic the Hedgehog paired with the iconic Hello Kitty.

Subsequent reveals included Miles “Tails” Prower, matched with Cinnamoroll, and Amy Rose, paired with My Melody.

These initial pairings showcased a thoughtful approach to aligning character personalities across both universes, blending the fast-paced world of Sonic with the charming aesthetic of Sanrio.

New illustrations have now revealed the next two pairings of Sonic and Sanrio characters.
Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic’s hot-headed rival and ally, is now paired with the popular Sanrio character Kuromi.

Kuromi, introduced by Sanrio in 2005, is My Melody’s mischievous rival and is characterized by her punk-rock aesthetic and somewhat rebellious, yet often endearing, personality.
Dr. Eggman, Sonic’s arch-nemesis and a brilliant but megalomaniacal scientist, finds an unlikely partner in Pompompurin.

Pompompurin, a golden retriever character created by Sanrio in 1996, is known for his laid-back demeanor, love of napping, and distinctive brown beret.
SEGA has indicated that more collaborative character pairings are expected to be announced in the future, as hinted by previously released character silhouettes.

The remaining silhouette suggests that at least 1 more Sonic character will be matched with a Sanrio counterpart.
In conjunction with these new illustrations, new “SONIC & FRIENDS” T-shirts are now officially available starting today, Friday, July 25th, 2025, on Amazon’s on-demand print service “Merch on Demand.”

This service allows for a wide array of customizable products to be printed and shipped directly to consumers, ensuring broad accessibility for fans to acquire merchandise featuring these unique character pairings.

A range of additional products based on the “SONIC & FRIENDS” and Sanrio collaboration is also planned for future release.
The high demand for merchandise from both the dedicated fan bases of Sonic and Sanrio is expected to make these items highly sought after.
