Sanrio Launches Pompompurin Train to Celebrate 30th Anniversary

Sanrio has announced the launch of a special wrapping train on the JR Yamanote Line to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its popular character, Pompompurin.
This golden retriever character, known for his signature brown beret, first debuted in 1996 and has since become one of Sanrio’s most enduring mascots alongside Hello Kitty and Cinnamoroll.

To mark this three-decade milestone, Sanrio has transformed a standard E235 series train into a relaxing space designed to alleviate the stress of daily commuting.

The exterior of the 11-car train features newly drawn illustrations of Pompompurin and his friends, known collectively as “Team Purin,” spending time together in a leisurely fashion.

The interior decoration is equally comprehensive, adhering to the anniversary theme: “Let’s forget about the difficult things.”

Passengers will find the character adorning almost every surface, including hanging posters, door-side advertisements, and even the straps used by standing commuters.

Furthermore, the train’s digital displays (Train Channel) will broadcast a special four-minute animation depicting a day in the life of Pompompurin, a video that is premiering exclusively on this service.

The train began operation on Saturday, January 17, 2026, and is scheduled to run until Sunday, February 1, 2026.

While the train operates on the circular Yamanote Line connecting major Tokyo hubs like Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Tokyo Station, the schedule is subject to change based on railway operations.

This railway promotion coincides with a broader anniversary campaign that includes a collaboration with McDonald’s Japan.

Since January 16, McDonald’s Japan has been offering Pompompurin toys with their Happy Sets, including items like a “Clock-style Memo Stand” and a “Beret Ruler.”

Additionally, Pompompurin and his hamster friend Muffin are currently featured in McDonald’s in-store broadcasts, presenting a special radio-style segment and debuting the anniversary song “Pompom Pow” until February 5.
