Sailor Moon Officially Returns to Universal Studios Japan for First Time Since 2022
Sailor Moon is officially returning to Universal Studios Japan for the first time since 2022, with two attractions planned as part of Universal Cool Japan 2027.
The new event will revive the fan-favorite “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Miracle: Moon Palace Chapter Deluxe” 4-D attraction while introducing a completely new Sailor Moon Story Ride for the first time.
This will be the fourth major collaboration between Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon and Universal Studios Japan following previous events held in 2018, 2019 and 2022.
Created by Naoko Takeuchi, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon began serialization in 1991 and follows Usagi Tsukino after she discovers her identity as Sailor Moon and joins the other Sailor Guardians in protecting Earth from supernatural threats.
The series subsequently became one of the defining magical girl franchises of the 1990s, with its anime adaptations reaching more than 40 countries alongside decades of manga, movies, stage productions, merchandise and other projects.
Sailor Moon first arrived at Universal Studios Japan in 2018 through “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Miracle 4-D,” an original theater attraction combining 3D animation with environmental effects to place visitors alongside Sailor Moon during a battle.
An entirely new Moon Palace story followed in 2019 before the attraction returned again in 2022 as the upgraded Deluxe version that will now be revived for Universal Cool Japan 2027.
“Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon the Miracle: Moon Palace Chapter Deluxe” transports guests to an elegant ball held at the Moon Palace by Usagi, Mamoru and Chibiusa before the celebration is interrupted by an enemy targeting the Legendary Silver Crystal.
With Sailor Moon pushed into danger, the attraction brings together the other nine Sailor Guardians and asks guests to lend their own support as the battle unfolds around them.
The 4-D presentation combines transformation sequences and large-scale action with a ballroom scene that shows all ten Sailor Guardians dressed for the celebration, giving the characters both their familiar battle appearances and specially designed formal outfits.
The Deluxe attraction made its US debut at Universal Studios Hollywood during Universal Fan Fest Nights from April 23 through May 16, 2026, taking the experience outside Japan for the first time before its upcoming return to the Osaka park.
Universal Studios Japan is also introducing “Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon x Story Ride,” a completely new attraction that will transform Hollywood Dream – The Ride with a narrative based around the Sailor Moon universe.
The addition gives the 2027 collaboration two separate experiences, pairing the returning theater production with a high-speed attraction that will take visitors through a new Sailor Moon story aboard the park’s roller coaster.
The return comes during Universal Studios Japan’s wider 25th anniversary celebrations, with Sailor Moon currently confirmed for Universal Cool Japan 2027 alongside The Apothecary Diaries, which will receive its own new movie-linked experience from February.
Universal Cool Japan has been running since 2015 and regularly transforms Japanese anime, manga and game franchises into temporary attractions, food and merchandise, with the previous 2026 event featuring properties including Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End and Jujutsu Kaisen.
Sailor Moon has also gained a major permanent attraction in Japan during 2026 through “Sailor Moon -Shining Theater Shinagawa Tokyo-,” a live theatrical experience that opened inside Tokyo’s Shinagawa Prince Hotel in April.
The production uses Club eX’s circular venue and rotating central stage for an original story, live performances and character greetings, giving fans another dedicated Sailor Moon experience outside the upcoming Universal Studios Japan event.
Visitors planning to attend Universal Cool Japan 2027 will also encounter Universal Studios Japan’s revised ticket system introduced in September 2026, which lowered the minimum Studio Pass price on quieter dates while expanding the park’s use of demand-based pricing.
Universal Studios Japan has yet to reveal the story for the new Sailor Moon Story Ride or the full lineup of collaboration food and merchandise, with those details scheduled to be announced closer to the event.
Both Sailor Moon attractions will run at Universal Studios Japan from December 2, 2026 through April 5, 2027 as part of Universal Cool Japan 2027.
