Pokémon teams up with Japan’s National Astronomical Observatory for new traveling exhibition

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan has announced a partnership with The Pokémon Company to create a new traveling exhibition titled “Pokémon Astronomical Observatory.”

This event is the first-ever educational project of its kind for the national observatory.

The exhibition is designed to teach visitors about the mysteries of the universe in a fun and engaging way by comparing the characteristics of various Pokémon to the features of real-life celestial objects.

The displays will use the diverse ecology of the Pokémon world as an analogy to explain astronomical concepts, from familiar objects like the sun and moon to distant galaxies.

One example given is a comparison between the Pokémon Dusknoir and the planet Jupiter.

Visitors will be able to learn about the history of astronomy and space science through a variety of media, including a rich collection of images, videos, physical models, and other materials.

The exhibition also teases that attendees may be able to encounter various Legendary and Mythical Pokémon that are associated with space.

A range of exclusive goods will be on sale at the exhibition, which will include what is sure to be a sought after plush of Pikachu dressed in a robe with a telescope, as seen in the official collaboration artwork.

A tour schedule for the exhibition has been announced, with its first stop being the Sagamihara City Museum in Kanagawa Prefecture.

Future stops are also planned for the spring and summer of 2026 in the Tohoku region, the autumn at the Toyohashi Museum of Natural History in Aichi, and the winter at the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture in Nagasaki.

The “Pokémon Astronomical Observatory” exhibition is set to begin its tour at the Sagamihara City Museum.

The first exhibition will run from Saturday, the 1st of November, 2025, to Monday, the 12th of January, 2026.
