Live-Action Drops of God Returns with Season 2 Trailer

Drops of God Season 2

Apple TV has released a trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Drops of God, an internationally co-produced, multilingual live-action television series based on the acclaimed manga The Drops of God (Kami no Shizuku) by Tadashi Agi and Shū Okimoto.

The eight-episode second season is scheduled to premiere on January 21, with new episodes streaming weekly until the conclusion of the season on March 11.

The series’ debut season premiered globally on Apple TV+ in April 2023, generating buzz that led to its success at the 2024 International Emmy Awards, where it clinched the International Emmy for Drama Series.

The first season was later broadcast and streamed simultaneously worldwide, becoming available on Hulu in Japan that September.

Key members of the creative team are returning for the next installment.

Oded Ruskin, known for his directorial work on series like “Absentia” and “No Man’s Land”, is back at the helm.

Quoc Dang Tran is once again writing the scripts, bringing his expertise from shows such as “Marianne” and “Parallel”.

The series is produced by Dynamic’s Klaus Zimmermann, whose credits include “Borgia” and “Trapped”.

This sprawling production is a massive collaboration between U.S., French, and Japanese entities.

Legendary Television, Dynamic Television, France Télévisions, and Hulu Japan are major backers, producing the project in conjunction with Adline Entertainment and 22H22.

The series’ official title in Japan is Kami no Shizuku/Drops of God, a convention that includes both the Japanese and English manga titles.

Legendary Television is managing the global distribution outside of France.

The series stars Tomohisa Yamashita as Issei Tomino and French actress Fleur Geffrier as Camille Léger.

The narrative centers on a high-stakes inheritance competition set within the sophisticated world of fine wines.

The recently deceased Frenchman Alexandre Léger, a famous figure in oenology and creator of the acclaimed Léger Wine Guide, has left behind the world’s most extraordinary wine collection.

His estranged daughter, Camille, who lives in Paris and hasn’t seen her father since her childhood, flies to Tokyo for the reading of the will.

To claim the inheritance, Camille must compete against Issei Tomino, a brilliant young oenologist, in a duel consisting of three wine tasting challenges.

The victor will take ownership of Léger’s entire empire; the loser will walk away empty-handed.

The challenge is uniquely difficult for Camille, who knows nothing about wine and has, in fact, never had a single drop.

The source material has a rich history.

Siblings Shin and Yuko Kibayashi, working under the pen name Tadashi Agi, launched The Drops of God manga with artist Okimoto in Kodansha’s “Morning” magazine in 2004, concluding the 44-volume series in 2014.

The immense popularity of the story previously led to a Japanese live-action adaptation that aired in Japan in 2009.

Kami no Shizuku

The manga saga continued with a follow-up series, “Marriage: Kami no Shizuku Saishūshō”, which ran from 2015 to 2020, and a more recent sequel, “Kami no Shizuku deuxième”, which serialized from September 2023 to April 2024.

English-speaking audiences can access the manga digitally through Comixology and Kodansha USA Publishing.

In a testament to the franchise’s enduring global appeal, a television anime adaptation of the manga is also slated for release.
