LEGO and Sony Interactive Entertainment have officially revealed their first LEGO PlayStation set, recreating Sony’s original 1994 console and controller as a huge 1,911-piece display model.

The “LEGO PlayStation” is constructed at close to 1:1 scale, measuring 26 cm wide once completed and reproducing the familiar gray console alongside a brick-built version of its original controller.

Sony launched the original PlayStation in Japan on December 3, 1994, before bringing the console to North America and Europe during 1995, beginning what would become one of the biggest brands in gaming.

The console eventually sold more than 102 million units worldwide and became the first home video game system to surpass 100 million sales, helping popularize CD-based games and real-time 3D graphics during the 1990s.

LEGO has previously recreated classic gaming hardware including the Nintendo Entertainment System and the SEGA Genesis, although this marks the first time PlayStation itself has received a full brick-built console set.

The new model does more than simply reproduce the PlayStation’s exterior, with functional Power and Open buttons incorporated into the build and the controller able to plug directly into the ports across the front of the console.

Its controller recreates the original pre-DualShock design, including the now-iconic Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square face buttons that have remained closely associated with PlayStation hardware ever since.

LEGO has also hidden one of the set’s biggest surprises inside the console, with the model opening to reveal two removable miniature dioramas celebrating games released during the original PlayStation generation.

The first is dedicated to “Gran Turismo,” recreating a miniature racing circuit populated by tiny cars in reference to Polyphony Digital’s hugely influential racing game, which originally launched in Japan in 1997.

The second pays tribute to the 1999 platformer “Ape Escape” with a small island scene and one of its recognizable monkeys, whose helmet warning light can be switched between red and blue.

Both dioramas can remain concealed within the PlayStation or be removed completely and displayed separately alongside the finished console.

The complete build measures over 6 cm tall, 26 cm wide and 19 cm deep, making the finished model considerably closer to the proportions of the original hardware than a conventional miniature LEGO recreation.
