Japan’s Most-Wanted Manga Adaptation Is Finally Getting an Anime in 2027

The upcoming series was announced during Shueisha’s “Jump PRESS 2026.10.12” presentation on October 12, accompanied by its first teaser trailer, a new promotional visual, and confirmation that Studio Hibari will handle animation production.

Created by Kota Kawae, “Nue’s Exorcist” began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in May 2023, combining supernatural action, school life, and comedy in a modern fantasy setting.
The story follows Gakuro Yajima, a high school student who has been able to see supernatural beings known as phantoms since childhood, despite his efforts to live an ordinary life.

His circumstances change when he discovers a mysterious room at his school containing Nue, a powerful female phantom who has remained sealed away for 60 years and developed an unusual fascination with popular culture.

Their meeting draws Gakuro into a world of dangerous spirits and exorcists, forcing him to confront supernatural threats as he develops his own abilities.

The manga has steadily built a following since its debut, with 16 collected volumes published in Japan and approximately 1.6 million copies in circulation.

It also topped AnimeJapan’s annual “Manga We Want to See Animated” ranking in 2025, placing first in a public vote highlighting popular manga that had yet to receive anime adaptations.

For the upcoming television series, Hiroyuki Hashimoto has been appointed director, having previously worked on anime including “Is the Order a Rabbit?”.
Hiroshi Seko, whose credits include “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “DAN DA DAN,” is handling series composition, with Shunpei Mochizuki responsible for character designs.

The production team also includes Takayuki Yamaguchi as sound director, with music composed by MONACA.
The announcement confirmed three principal voice actors, with Kaito Miura playing Gakuro Yajima, Saori Onishi voicing Nue, and Sayumi Suzushiro portraying Nanase Suo.
The newly released promotional video offers an early look at the anime’s adaptation of Kawae’s artwork, introducing Gakuro and Nue alongside a preview of their voice performances.

Kawae also shared a message celebrating the announcement, thanking readers for their support and revealing that Hashimoto’s earlier anime work had provided personal encouragement during his time working as a company employee.
“Nue’s Exorcist” joins another major Weekly Shonen Jump title preparing for a 2027 television debut, with Takeru Hokazono’s “Kagurabachi” officially scheduled to begin broadcasting in April next year.

The sword-fighting action series received its own anime announcement earlier in 2026, with Tetsuya Takeuchi directing the adaptation at animation studio Cypic.
The “Nue’s Exorcist” anime is scheduled to premiere across Japan on the TV Asahi network in summer 2027, with an exact broadcast date and international streaming availability yet to be announced.
