Howl’s Moving Castle’s Official Calcifer Lamp Returns as Studio Ghibli Announces Restock
Image by Charlotte DavisStudio Ghibli has brought back a popular Howl’s Moving Castle lamp that transforms Calcifer into a flickering candle-style light designed to recreate the fire demon’s shifting flames.
The returning “Howl’s Moving Castle Calcifer Flickering Candle Light” places Calcifer on top of a large white candle, allowing the character to function as both a decorative display piece and a small ambient light.

Calcifer plays a central role in Hayao Miyazaki’s 2004 adaptation of Howl’s Moving Castle, living inside the castle’s fireplace and providing the magical power that allows the enormous structure to move.

His flames regularly shift between warm red and cooler blue tones throughout the movie, an effect recreated through the lighting built into the new lamp.

Rather than using a conventional button on the visible side of the candle, the main power switch is hidden underneath, after which gently shaking the lamp can be used to turn the light on or off.

Once illuminated, Calcifer’s flame gradually changes between red and blue at irregular intervals, while a flickering effect helps make the static figure appear more animated when viewed in a darkened room.

The light will also automatically switch itself off after approximately 15 minutes, allowing it to be used as a small bedside or ambient lamp without remaining illuminated indefinitely.

A matching candle holder is included beneath the main light, with the complete display measuring approximately 13.5 cm tall and 12 cm wide.

The candle itself can be removed from the holder when needed, while its shake-controlled lighting means it does not need to be repeatedly lifted out simply to reach a conventional power button.

The lamp requires two AA alkaline batteries, which are sold separately, and is constructed using PVC, ABS, EVA and flocked materials.

Howl’s Moving Castle has also recently returned to Studio Ghibli’s homeware lineup through an updated perpetual calendar based on Howl’s enormous walking castle, combining a detailed recreation of the structure with reusable date and day blocks.

Howl’s Moving Castle remains one of Studio Ghibli’s most popular works, with Ghibli Park’s Valley of Witches recreating Howl’s Castle and other locations from the movie, while the park’s new “A Night in the Valley of Witches” short film also draws directly on that area and its magical setting.

The “Howl’s Moving Castle Calcifer Flickering Candle Light” is priced at ¥5,940 (approximately $38 / £28) and has recently been restocked through Studio Ghibli’s official Donguri Kyowakoku online store in Japan.
Donguri Kyowakoku does not presently offer international shipping directly, but fans overseas can use a third-party proxy such as Buyee or Rakuten to acquire a Japanese forwarding address to allow onward shipping.
