Gundam Wing 30th anniversary video teases new sequel anime series

A special 30th anniversary video for the classic anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Wing has been released.

The new video, titled “-operation30th-,” celebrates the legacy of the influential 1995 anime with a montage of newly animated scenes set to a new version of the show’s second opening theme, “RHYTHM EMOTION.”

This video is the latest part of the celebrations for the series’ 30th anniversary, which so far have included new figures of Wing Zero and Heero Yuy, a panel and booth at San Diego Comic Con, and the announcement that official Gundam Wing shops will open in Japan.

The animation, which was directed by the accomplished action director and animator Toru Iwasawa, recreates famous moments from the series with a modern quality that remains faithful to the original art style.

The video also includes the appearance of several mobile suits and characters that were not in the original television anime, but are from the wider Gundam Wing universe.

These include a new cloaked version of the Wing Gundam Zero, Heero Yuy’s adoptive father Odin Lowe, and Chang Wufei’s wife, Meilan.

Most significantly, the final moments of the video feature imagery that is believed to be a direct reference to the official sequel novel, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing: Frozen Teardrop.

This has ignited a wave of excitement and speculation among fans that an anime adaptation of the sequel novel may finally be in production.

In addition to the new animated video, a new illustration celebrating the 30th anniversary has also been released.

The new artwork is a direct homage to the “eyecatch” bumpers that were used to break up the commercial breaks during the original 1990s broadcast of the anime.

This anniversary project serves as a nostalgic tribute to the series that introduced a generation of fans to the Gundam franchise, while also providing a glimpse of what the future may hold.
