Pre-orders go live as HG 1/144 GFreD Gundam announced

BANDAI SPIRITS has officially revealed the identity of a mystery Gunpla kit.
Their social media accounts had previously teased an upcoming “HG Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX New Product D (tentative)” Gunpla kit.
The “New Product D (tentative)” has now been confirmed as the GFreD. This new kit marks the first time the GFreD has been adapted as a Gunpla plastic model kit.

The new “HG 1/144 GFreD” kit will be a High Grade Gunpla model, representing the second unit of the protagonist’s Mobile Suit “GQuuuuuuX” from the ongoing anime series Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX.

Following its 1979 debut, the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise continues to evolve with new animated series, films, and video games.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is the latest addition to this expansive universe and the release of Gunpla kits from the series allows fans to directly engage with the unfolding story and collect the characters and machines that will define this new era.

The announcement of a “GFreD” Gunpla kit comes after its reveal in a recent episode of the Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime.
The “High Grade (HG)” line of kits is well regarded for offering a balance of straightforward assembly and accurate detailing at an affordable price.

The model kit replicates the distinct and unique form of the GFreD, ensuring an accurate representation of its on-screen appearance.

The Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime is a co-production between Sunrise, the studio that is usually behind Gundam animes, and Khara, the animation studio responsible for the Rebuild of Evangelion films whose staff worked on many Gainax productions including the original Evangelion series and FLCL.

While previous statements from staff working on Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX have downplayed any similarity between the series and Neon Genesis Evangelion, the GFreD bears a remarkable similarity to Evangelion Unit-01.

The way GFreD was revealed in the anime, its design and color scheme and its self-activation all appear to intentionaly recall elements of Evangelion Unit-01.
The way that the GFreD head armor opens up like a jaw to expose another form is another similarity.

This feature is replicated in the Gunpla kit by the ability to swap head parts to recreate both the “undeployed” and “deployed” states of the head.
The completed model boasts movable joints in key areas such as the torso and hip joints, enabling dynamic action poses that capture the agility of the GFreD in combat.

The GFreD’s backpack has also been designed with flexible movement in mind, allowing builders to position it at various angles to create a wide range of expressive poses matching its anime appearance.

The release of the “HG 1/144 GFreD” kit in August will follow the recent re-release of the “HG 1/144 GQuuuuuuX” (Sieg Axe) kit.
The new “HG 1/144 GFreD” kit can now be pre-ordered from specialist retailers and hobby stores for 2,530 yen (approx. $17.43 USD / £12.91 GBP) with orders due to ship upon its release in August 2025.
