Square Enix has announced a new deluxe version of a popular tabletop card game based around one of Final Fantasy’s most recognisable creatures.

“Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt Deluxe” is a comprehensive set that combines two previously released card games, “Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt” and “Chocobo’s Dungeon & Monsters”, into a single, enhanced package.

The game is themed around the Chocobo, an iconic, flightless bird from the long-running Final Fantasy series that has been a fan-favorite since its debut in the 1980s.

The base game, “Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt”, is a simple push-your-luck experience where players send their Chocobos out to find elemental crystals.

This “Deluxe” edition is expanded with content from “Chocobo’s Dungeon & Monsters”, which adds classic Final Fantasy monsters to the mix that players must overcome.

The set features a roster of well-known creatures that Final Fantasy players will immediately recognize.

Monsters like the explosive Bomb, the floating Ahriman, the knife-wielding Tonberry, and the status-ailment-inflicting Malboro all make an appearance as cards.

Other classic creatures such as the Goblin, the needle-shooting Cactuar, the mighty Behemoth, and the helpful Moogle are also included.

The new edition has been updated with newly drawn card illustrations and includes additional rules to create a more dynamic gameplay experience.

The game is designed for two to five players, with a recommended age of six years and older, and has an average playtime of ten to twenty minutes per session.

A key design feature of the game is that the cards themselves are language-independent, relying on universal illustrations and symbols rather than text.

This, combined with its simple rules, makes the game highly accessible to a global audience and suitable for families.

The included rulebook will be provided in four different languages: Japanese, English, German, and French.

The full card and component list includes:

  • Exploration Cards:
    • 12 Chocobo Cards
    • 5 Fat Chocobo Cards
  • Crystal Cards:
    • 4 each of Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth Crystal Cards
  • Cards for Basic Rules:
    • 4 each of Bomb and Ahriman Cards
  • Cards for Dungeon & Monsters Rules:
    • 4 each of Goblin, Tonberry, Malboro, Cactuar, Moogle, and Behemoth Cards
    • 3 Moogle Coins
  • Player Markers:
    • 4 Crystal Markers
    • 1 Chocobo Marker

“Chocobo’s Crystal Hunt Deluxe” is priced at 3,960 yen (approx. $27 USD / £20 GBP) and is scheduled to be released on November 29th.

Pre-orders for the new card game set are currently open on the official Square Enix e-STORE.

If the game sounds too complicated, a simpler option could be the Chocobo-themed set of traditional playing cards suitable for any game that uses a standard 52-card deck.
