Danganronpa 2×2 Finally Sets January 2027 Release Date as Mysterious New Character Revealed

Spike Chunsoft has finally locked in a release date for its long-awaited return to one of Danganronpa’s most popular killing games, following the decision to delay the project beyond its original 2026 launch window.
Danganronpa 2×2 will now release on January 14, 2027, with the date confirmed during the September 9 Nintendo Direct alongside new footage of its alternate storyline and Class Trials.

The game was originally announced in September 2025 with a broad 2026 release window, but Spike Chunsoft confirmed in July that development would continue into early 2027 instead.
Producer Shohei Sakakibara explained at the time that the additional development period was needed to deliver the best possible experience, promising that a more specific release date would follow once the team was ready to provide one.

That makes the January announcement the first firm date fans have received since the delay, and places the game right at the beginning of its revised early 2027 release window.
Danganronpa 2×2 is much more substantial than a straightforward remaster of 2012’s Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, effectively combining a rebuilt version of the original game with an entirely different second killing game.

Players can experience the familiar story through Original Mode, which updates the original scenario with refreshed visuals, presentation, and character artwork for current hardware.
The much bigger addition is the new “Slayhem Mode,” known as “Kyouki Mode” in Japan, which returns to Jabberwock Island with the same core cast before sending events in a completely different direction.

Victims, culprits, and the tricks behind the murders can all change compared with the original game, meaning players who already know Goodbye Despair’s cases will not simply be solving the same mysteries for a second time.
Spike Chunsoft has previously said the new scenario contains roughly the same amount of content as the original story, with additional information suggesting Slayhem Mode is around 20 percent larger when the two are directly compared.

The September Nintendo Direct provided another look at that alternate route and also revealed that Slayhem Mode will introduce new elements to the Class Trials, although the full mechanics behind them have yet to be explained.
The trailer ended with another surprise by briefly showing a mysterious new character during the trial footage, despite Spike Chunsoft previously emphasizing that Danganronpa 2×2 uses the same returning cast as Goodbye Despair.

Exactly who the character is and how they fit into the new killing game is still being kept secret, adding another unanswered question to a scenario that has deliberately been revealed without exposing its new victims or culprits.
Exploration has been reworked as well, replacing the original game’s side-scrolling World Map with a new 3D version that makes Jabberwock Island easier to navigate, while the first-person environments have also been visually rebuilt.

The delay and new release date follow a major period of renewed activity for Danganronpa, which recently passed 10 million cumulative game shipments worldwide after celebrating the franchise’s 15th anniversary.
Essential Japan previously reported on the July delay when Danganronpa 2×2 moved from 2026 into early 2027, alongside the first detailed reveal of Slayhem Mode and its redesigned exploration systems.

Danganronpa 2×2 is being developed by Gemdrops with Spike Chunsoft handling planning and production, while original series creator Kazutaka Kodaka is supervising and contributing to the original concept and murder tricks alongside mystery writer Takekuni Kitayama.
The game is planned for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, with both Japanese and English voice acting supported.

The standard edition is priced at $59.99 in the US, while the $139.99 Psycho Tropical Vacation Package adds a reversible tropical hat, Kidrobot Monokuma and Monomi figures, the soundtrack, and a clamshell-style collector’s box.
After months of uncertainty following its move out of 2026, Danganronpa 2×2 is now officially set to release on January 14, 2027.
