Capcom to Donate Street Fighter Pro Tournament Proceeds to Kumamoto Earthquake Relief
Capcom has pledged ¥10 million (approx. $63,000 USD / £47,000 GBP) to support relief and recovery efforts following the devastating Kumamoto earthquake, with part of the donation funded through an upcoming Street Fighter esports competition.
The announcement makes Capcom the latest major Japanese game publisher to contribute to recovery efforts, joining a growing list of companies helping communities rebuild after the disaster.
The magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture on July 28, 2026, causing extensive damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure while forcing more than 10,000 people into evacuation shelters and disrupting electricity and water supplies across the region.
For many residents, the disaster also revived memories of the devastating 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, which claimed hundreds of lives and damaged almost 200,000 homes throughout the prefecture.
Capcom confirmed that part of its ¥10 million donation will come from proceeds generated by the Street Fighter League JAPAN 2026 Preseason Division Championship, which takes place on August 10 and August 11.
The company also shared its sympathies with everyone affected by the disaster, expressing its hope that the impacted communities will recover and rebuild as quickly as possible.
Capcom’s contribution follows several other major relief announcements from across Japan’s gaming industry in recent days.
Square Enix recently pledged ¥30 million (approx. $190,000 USD / £141,000 GBP) through the Japanese Red Cross Society to support both immediate humanitarian assistance and the long-term recovery of affected communities.
Nintendo has committed ¥50 million (approx. $317,000 USD / £235,000 GBP) to the Japanese Red Cross Society while also offering free repairs for eligible Nintendo hardware owned by residents living in designated disaster relief areas, regardless of warranty status.
The Pokémon Company has also announced a ¥100 million donation (approx. $633,000 USD / £471,000 GBP), with funding being distributed through Kumamoto Prefecture relief funds and the Japanese Red Cross Society to assist both emergency relief and ongoing reconstruction efforts.
