Akasaka Hikawa Festival

Akasaka Hikawa Festival

The Akasaka Hikawa Festival is the grand annual festival for the historic Akasaka Hikawa Shrine in central Tokyo.

This traditional event is held over a three-day weekend in mid-September.

Akasaka Hikawa Festival 5

It is a major cultural event for the Akasaka area, known for its beautiful and solemn processions.

The festival features parades of ornate dashi, which are traditional Japanese floats, and numerous mikoshi, or portable shrines.

One of the main highlights is the Yoimiya Junko, a special evening parade held on the Friday.

This nighttime procession features an illuminated float and mikoshi, creating a magical atmosphere.

The main event is the Shinkosai parade on Sunday, a large-scale procession that includes the shrine’s main entourage, two historic floats, and mikoshi from sixteen different neighborhood associations.
