Urasa Naked Man Festival 2026

Last Updated on March 6, 2026

The historic Bishamondo Temple is preparing to host the annual Urasa Naked Pushing Festival, a winter tradition with a storied history spanning over 1200 years.

Participants dressed in traditional white fundoshi loincloths and sandals will gather to brave the freezing temperatures in a display of spiritual endurance and physical strength.

The event features a challenging course where men must plunge into an icy pool of natural spring water before attempting to navigate through the crowds to reach the temple sanctuary.

Competitors aim to be the first to offer prayers to Bishamon, the deity associated with success in both war and wealth, amid a backdrop of rhythmic chanting and shouting.

Spectators are expected to line the nearby streets with candles to light the way and provide encouragement to the participants as they make their way toward the temple grounds.

While the primary ritual occurs after the sun sets, the surrounding area will be filled with activity throughout the day as vendors serve various local festival foods to visitors.

The festivities are centered at the Bishamondo Temple, which is located just a five minute walk from the local Urasa Station.

Travelers from Tokyo can easily reach the site of the celebration in about 90 minutes by utilizing the Joetsu Shinkansen line.
