The town of Ogose is preparing for its annual Plum Blossom Festival at the historic Ogose Bairin, which is recognized as one of the three premier plum blossom gardens in the Kanto region.
The Kanto Plain encompasses the vast area surrounding Tokyo, including the prefectures of Saitama, Kanagawa, Chiba, Ibaraki, Gunma, and Tochigi.
While Kairakuen in Mito and Soga Bairin in Kanagawa share this prestigious designation, the Ogose site remains a significant cultural destination for nature enthusiasts.
Visitors can explore a two hectare park featuring approximately 1000 plum trees, including 200 ancient specimens that contribute to the town’s total population of 20,000 flowering trees.
During the official festival period, an entry fee of 500 yen is required to access the grove, though the blossoms are available for public viewing free of charge outside of these dates.
The event features a variety of attractions including a mini train that travels through the flowering grove, live musical performances, and traditional dance displays.
Festival attendees can sample classic treats like chocolate bananas and candy floss from stalls, or visit designated areas for more substantial meals.
The local market will also offer bonsai and plum blossom trees for purchase, and the town mascot Umerin is scheduled to make appearances during the weekends.
Travelers arriving via public transport can reach the venue by taking the Hachiko line to Ogose Station, followed by a 40 minute walk or a seasonal shuttle bus.
Those choosing to drive will find parking available for 500 yen, with additional independent lots located a short distance from the main park entrance.
