Kiyomori Festival on Miyajima 2026

Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The sacred island of Miyajima is preparing to host the annual Kiyomori Festival at the historic Itsukushima Shrine.

This cultural event features local residents dressed in elaborate medieval Heian period costumes to honor Taira no Kiyomori, the powerful leader of the Heike clan.

Participants will pay tribute to the historical figure who transformed the floating shrine into the unique architectural masterpiece that draws visitors from around the world today.

The procession offers a rare look at traditional attire and customs that have been preserved by the community for generations.

Visitors planning to attend should note that the iconic five-storied pagoda located on the northern side of the shrine is currently undergoing extensive renovation works.

These restoration efforts are expected to continue through the end of the year, although the main festival activities at the shrine will proceed as planned.

The celebration serves as a significant expression of gratitude toward the legacy of the Heike clan and their impact on the region’s cultural heritage.

The stunning backdrop of the Torii gate and the surrounding waters of the Seto Inland Sea provide a dramatic setting for this traditional gathering.
