Trump vs. Otaku: tariffs cause Good Smile Company to suspend US pre-orders and delay shipments

Good Smile Company, a major online retailer of Japanese figures and collectibles, has announced significant changes to US pre-order and shipping policies.
They have cited the volatile landscape of international trade policy and the resulting uncertainty surrounding U.S. tariffs.
In a statement released today, the company stated that it has made the “difficult decision” to temporarily halt all new pre-orders placed through its GoodsmileUS.com website.
Additionally, the retailer will be delaying shipments of products that are entering the United States until further notice, impacting customers awaiting previously ordered items.
The company emphasized that this decision was not taken lightly, highlighting the “unpredictable nature of the current tariff environment” which has created substantial challenges in terms of both cost management and logistical planning.

Good Smile Company stated its commitment to maintaining the level of service and transparency that its customers have come to expect, suggesting that these temporary measures are necessary to navigate the current economic uncertainties.
For customers with existing pre-orders that are facing delays beyond their originally anticipated release schedules, Good Smile Company has assured that they will be contacted directly with more detailed information regarding the delays and any available options.
The company also addressed recent price adjustments observed on its website, explaining that these changes are a direct reflection of the prevailing tariff conditions.
Good Smile Company indicated that should the tariff situation improve before an item is ready for shipment, customers’ orders will be adjusted to reflect a lower price accordingly.

Regarding outbound shipments for future pre-orders that have not yet arrived in the United States, the company confirmed a temporary hold. Normal fulfillment operations will resume once the situation regarding international trade becomes more stable and predictable.
Good Smile Company have advised that they may end up passing on the costs of the tariffs to their customers rather than honoring the pre-order prices that were advertised when customers placed their order.
In the event that tariffs are still in effect at the time of an orders shipment and a fee must be added to an order, Good Smile Company U.S. has stated that customers will be notified of this.
This notification will also include the option to cancel the order should the customer prefer not to proceed with the additional cost.
Good Smile Company concluded its statement by expressing sincere gratitude for their customers’ patience and understanding during this “unpredictable time”.
