The Apothecary Diaries new sequel will make a major change to the series

Fans of The Apothecary Diaries anime can look forward to more mysteries, as a sequel to the recently concluded second season has been officially announced.
Accompanying the announcement, a “super” teaser trailer was released.

The trailer states the sequel will “take place in a new land”, which gives the first confirmation that the series is set for a major upheaval in terms of setting.
The Apothecary Diaries is based on Natsu Hyuga’s light novel series, illustrated by Toko Shino and published by Shufunotomo under their Hero Bunko label.

The story centers on Maomao, a young woman with a sharp mind and extensive knowledge of medicine, who finds herself serving in the emperor’s sprawling rear palace after being kidnapped.
Despite her unassuming appearance, Maomao’s unique skills are quickly noticed by Jinshi, the perceptive head eunuch.

He enlists her to act as a food taster for the Emperor’s favored consort, drawing Maomao into the intricate and sometimes dangerous world of the palace.
Her keen powers of deduction and inherent curiosity consistently lead her into new adventures and perilous situations, making a quiet life seem increasingly distant.

The light novel series first began in 2014, building upon an original web novel that started in 2011 on Shousetsuka ni Narou.
As of May 2025, the light novel series has expanded to 16 volumes.

The popularity of the series has also led to two manga adaptations, published by Square Enix and Shogakukan respectively.
The anime’s first season premiered in 2023, followed by its second season, which debuted in Japan in January 2025, with both seasons running for two consecutive cours.

While a sequel has been confirmed, the specific format of this new installment, whether it will be a third season, a movie, an OVA, or another type of project, has not yet been revealed.

More information is likely to be confirmed in the coming months, as previous seasons of the anime have been relatively swift to go into production after the initial announcement.
