Take a first look at Universal Studios Japan’s new SPY x FAMILY rides
Universal Studios Japan (USJ) has revealed more details about their new SPYxFAMILY rides and events.
The theme park in Osaka is gearing up for a year-long celebration of its “Universal Cool Japan” event which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.
As part of this milestone, the park is launching “Universal Cool Japan 2025” which will be headlined by a collaboration with the wildly popular anime and manga series SPY×FAMILY.
The collaboration with SPYxFAMILY will form part of the anniversary celebrations, which will also feature a new attraction based on “The Apothecary Diaries”, expected to open in July.
The SPYxFAMILY collaboration was announced earlier this year but USJ have only just released the full details about the new rides that it will feature.
From Tuesday, July 1st, 2025, to Sunday, January 4th, 2026, guests can immerse themselves in the world of the Forger family through three brand-new, limited-time attractions, including the series’ first-ever VR coaster.
SPY×FAMILY has captivated audiences worldwide with its unique blend of espionage, comedy, and heartwarming family dynamics.
The story centers around Loid Forger, a master spy who must create a makeshift family to execute a critical mission.
His adopted daughter Anya is a telepath, and his wife Yor is a highly skilled assassin. Their adopted dog, Bond, also possesses precognitive abilities, all while they navigate their secret lives and the delicate balance of their unusual family unit.
The series’ engaging plot, endearing characters, and stylish action sequences have made it a global phenomenon, spawning successful manga sales and a critically acclaimed anime adaptation.
Leading the “SPY×FAMILY” takeover at USJ is the highly anticipated “SPY×FAMILY XR Ride ~Operation Hyperdrive~.”
This groundbreaking attraction marks the first VR coaster experience in the “Universal Cool Japan” event series.
Guests will embark on a thrilling spy mission alongside the Forger family in an “ultra-realistic” virtual world.
As new WISE agents, riders will infiltrate Eden Academy with the master spy Twilight (Loid Forger’s codename) to retrieve top-secret documents, however, the shadow of an enemy organization looms.
The ride promises high-stakes action and unexpected twists, including the inevitable chaos brought by the telepathic daughter Anya.
Riders will board a special “USJ” vehicle built by Franky, Loid’s informant, and join forces with the Forger family to protect the crucial intelligence. This immersive XR ride will take place at the “Space Fantasy the Ride” attraction.
Adding another layer of interactive fun, USJ will introduce the “SPY×FAMILY Story Ride ~Exciting! Trolley Experience in an Extracurricular Class~.”
This attraction, a first-ever “Story Ride” for the series, will plunge guests into an exciting extracurricular mine cart adventure alongside Anya and her classmates from Eden Academy, including Becky Blackbell and Damian Desmond.
Riders will speed through a mountainous course filled with ups and downs, culminating in a journey into a mysterious pitch-black cave.
This family-friendly ride promises a fun-filled experience alongside the characters of “SPY×FAMILY” and will be located at the “Hollywood Dream – The Ride” attraction.
For a more leisurely and family-oriented experience, USJ will also present “Everyone, Dad and Mom Challenge! / SPY×FAMILY Exciting! USJ Park Rally”.
This family attraction is a park-wide quiz rally accessible through the park’s official LINE app, allowing both children and adults to participate easily.
Families can embark on a tour of the park, answering “SPY×FAMILY” themed questions scattered throughout the New York, Amity Village, and Hollywood areas.
Correct answers will be rewarded with voice lines from Loid, Anya, Yor, and Bond, who are depicted as enjoying their own holiday at a certain amusement park.
Families who successfully complete all the quiz questions will receive an original limited-edition sticker featuring a “Stella” design based on a symbol from Eden Academy.
To further capture the memories of this unique “SPY×FAMILY” experience, USJ will also offer a “SPY×FAMILY XR Ride Photo Opportunity”.
This photo spot will allow guests to take memorable commemorative photos with the Forger family and their friends, providing a souvenir of their thrilling spy adventure at the park.
The photo opportunity will also include an original photo frame for displaying these special moments.
The new “SPY×FAMILY” rides created for Universal Cool Japan 2025 highlight the immense popularity of the series both at home in Japan and overseas.
It joins the list of iconic anime and manga series that have taken part in Universal Cool Japan, which includes hugely popular series such as My Hero Academia, Attack on Titan and Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The year-long Universal Cool Japan 2025 celebration promises to be a major draw for both domestic and international tourists, many of whom will be eager to experience the new and exciting adventures on offer alongside Loid, Anya, Yor and Bond.
