Studio Ghibli’s First Official LEGO Set Moves One Step Closer as Howl’s Castle Hits Major Milestone

Studio Ghibli has moved another step closer to potentially receiving its first official LEGO set, after a huge fan-designed recreation of Howl’s Moving Castle reached the support needed to enter LEGO’s formal review process.
The fan-created “Howl’s Moving Castle” project by LEGO Ideas builder butterbarr recreates the movie’s enormous walking fortress using approximately 5,000 pieces and has now secured the 10,000 supporters required to be considered for an official set.

Released in 2004 and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Howl’s Moving Castle follows Sophie after she is cursed by the Witch of the Waste and transformed into an elderly woman.

Her search for a way to break the spell eventually leads her to the mysterious wizard Howl and his enormous magical castle, a ramshackle structure that travels across the landscape on mechanical legs while housing Howl, Sophie, Calcifer and their companions.

That castle has become one of the movie’s defining images, with its collection of mismatched towers, pipes, smokestacks, mechanical components and improvised-looking architecture making it particularly suited to an intricate LEGO recreation.

Butterbarr’s interpretation uses roughly 5,000 pieces to reproduce that heavily layered exterior, concentrating on the castle’s overall shape and display presence rather than attempting to make the finished model physically walk.

The build includes its uneven rooftops, numerous chimneys and towers, mechanical legs and densely constructed outer walls, with the complete castle positioned on a dedicated display base.

That approach differs from some previous fan recreations of Howl’s Castle, which have incorporated motors or other moving mechanisms to imitate the structure walking across the landscape.

Reaching 10,000 supporters is the crucial first hurdle for projects submitted through LEGO Ideas, allowing the design to leave the community-support stage and enter an official review by LEGO.

The company will now assess the project alongside the other submissions in the third LEGO Ideas review of 2026, considering whether it could realistically be developed into a commercial LEGO set.

Passing that threshold does not guarantee production, however, and Studio Ghibli fans have been in this position before.

Multiple projects based on Howl’s Moving Castle have previously gathered the same 10,000 supporters needed for review, but none have ultimately been approved for an official LEGO release.

A previous Howl’s Moving Castle submission was among the projects rejected from LEGO Ideas’ third 2024 review, while other Studio Ghibli concepts based on properties including My Neighbor Totoro have similarly reached the review stage without making it into production.

The repeated submissions show sustained interest in an official collaboration, with another My Neighbor Totoro project entering the third 2026 review earlier this month and several Totoro concepts having previously passed the 10,000-supporter milestone.

If butterbarr’s design does clear the review process, it would therefore represent a major first for Studio Ghibli, turning one of the studio’s most elaborate fantasy creations into its first officially produced LEGO set.

Howl’s Castle has already become a recurring focus of official Studio Ghibli merchandise, including an updated perpetual calendar that recreates the walking fortress as a detailed display piece.

The broader movie has also featured across other merchandise releases, including a Black Feather ring inspired by Howl’s transformed appearance that recently returned to sale.

The fan-designed “Howl’s Moving Castle” reached 10,000 supporters on October 24, 2026 and has now entered the third LEGO Ideas review of 2026, although LEGO has not announced when the results will be revealed or confirmed that any Studio Ghibli set will enter production.
