Square Enix confirms new Dissidia: Final Fantasy game will be set in modern day Tokyo

Square Enix has officially announced “Dissidia Duellum: Final Fantasy,” a new installment in the action-packed Dissidia crossover series, set to launch for smartphones in 2026.
The new mobile game introduces a striking premise, transplanting popular characters from the vast Final Fantasy universe into the contemporary landscape of urban Tokyo.

This announcement follows the discontinuation of the previous mobile installment, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, in early 2024, signaling Square Enix’s continued interest in utilizing the successful Dissidia sub-series for the mobile market.
The central theme of this latest game in the Final Fantasy series is a bold “FF x Modern Times” concept.

A teaser trailer released for the game highlighted fan-favorite characters such as Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII and Terra Branford from Final Fantasy VI, as warriors who are mysteriously summoned into modern Tokyo.

The game’s narrative will revolve around these heroes battling strange monsters that emerge from a menacing energy polluting a giant, blue-glowing crystal that has inexplicably appeared in the city.

As these warriors fight in secret, concealing their identities, the public begins to refer to them as “ghosts.”
The gameplay genre for this latest entry is described as a “boss-hunting team battle.”

The format is a competitive 3-on-3 structure where two rival teams of Final Fantasy heroes race to defeat a massive boss character before the opposing team does.

Players will engage in exhilarating action with simple, one-handed controls. The characters are rendered in a visually distinct, beautiful cel-look style.

A preliminary roster of ten characters has been confirmed on the official website:
- Warrior of Light (Final Fantasy I)

- Kain Highwind (Final Fantasy IV)

- Krile Mayer Baldesion (Final Fantasy V)

- Terra Branford (Final Fantasy VI)

- Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII)

- Rinoa Heartilly (Final Fantasy VIII)

- Zidane Tribal (Final Fantasy IX)

- Lightning (Final Fantasy XIII)

- Gaia (Final Fantasy XIV)

- Prompto Argentum (Final Fantasy XV)

A notable feature of the game is the inclusion of modern-day alternative outfits, allowing players to customize their warriors with costumes such as school uniforms and jackets, in addition to their classic, original attire.

“Dissidia Duellum: Final Fantasy” is scheduled for a 2026 release on both iOS and Android platforms and will operate on a free-to-play model with optional in-game purchases.
To fine-tune the experience ahead of launch, Square Enix has announced a closed beta test. Recruitment for the test is currently open from October 14th until October 28th.

The actual closed beta will run from November 7th to November 14th, targeting approximately 20,000 participants.
Interested players can find detailed application instructions on the game’s official website.
