Seiko Bids Farewell to Japan's Hello Kitty Shinkansen with New Commemorative Memorial Watch

A special new collector’s watch has been unveiled to commemorate the retirement of the beloved Hello Kitty Shinkansen, giving fans one final way to celebrate the unique collaboration between Sanrio and JR West.

Created in partnership with Seiko, the commemorative mechanical timepiece captures the spirit of the iconic themed bullet train, which carried passengers between Shin-Osaka and Hakata from June 2018 until its final journey in May 2026.

The Hello Kitty Shinkansen became one of Japan’s most recognizable themed trains during its eight-year service, delighting passengers with a colorful design that celebrated both regional travel and one of Sanrio’s most famous characters.

The watch draws inspiration from the distinctive front end of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen, incorporating a black-to-pink gradient dial accented by the streamlined long-nose profile that made the Series 500 Shinkansen instantly recognizable.

A uniformed Hello Kitty appears at the 4 o’clock position, while a gold-colored ribbon decorates the dial at 1 o’clock as an elegant tribute to the character.

Its mechanical movement is showcased through an open-heart display positioned at 9 o’clock, allowing the internal mechanism to remain visible as it marks the passing of time in a design inspired by the rhythmic motion of a Shinkansen’s wheels.

The memorial watch has been produced as a limited edition of just 2,026 pieces, reflecting the year of its release and adding further exclusivity for collectors.

Each watch is presented in a specially designed collector’s box featuring Hello Kitty surrounded by a celebratory bouquet using the official farewell artwork created for the end of the Hello Kitty Shinkansen’s service.

The release arrives shortly after Hello Kitty secured fifth place in the recently announced 2026 Sanrio Character Ranking, reaffirming the enduring popularity of the iconic character around the world.

The Hello Kitty Shinkansen Finale Commemorative Mechanical Watch is priced at ¥98,780 (approx. $668 USD / £495 GBP), with reservations opening through the PREMICO online store from July 1, 2026 ahead of scheduled deliveries beginning in late December 2026.
