Sanrio Revives Pompompurin’s Original 1996 Design for New 30th Anniversary Collection

Sanrio has revealed a new Pompompurin collection celebrating their most popular mascots’ 30th anniversary that brings back the retro look of his earliest merchandise from 1996.

The new “Pompompurin From Back Then Design Series” draws directly from the first “Boku, Purin” merchandise range released during his debut year, recreating its artwork, soft textures and simple styling across 16 new items.

Pompompurin made his debut in 1996 and has since grown into one of Sanrio’s biggest characters, with the golden retriever immediately recognizable through his brown beret, relaxed personality and close group of friends known as Team Purin.

The anniversary range leans heavily into that early history rather than focusing on more modern redesigns, with plush toys recreating the appearance and fluffy fur of the original 1996 releases alongside merchandise featuring photographs of the new retro-style plushes.

Sanrio is opening temporary “Pompompurin 30th Anniversary Shops” at 37 Sanrio Store locations across Japan, which will offer the “Pompompurin From Back Then Design Series” as well as a smaller new range of exclusive merchandise:

• Chibittomo Secret Keychain – Pompompurin Friends Costumes – ¥946 (approx. $6 USD / £4 GBP) each

• Chibittomo Secret Keychain – Sanrio Characters in Pompompurin Costumes – ¥946 (approx. $6 USD / £4 GBP) each

• Secret Drawstring Pouch & Mini Handbag – ¥748 (approx. $5 USD / £3 GBP) each

• Sticker Set – ¥693 (approx. $4 USD / £3 GBP)

Participating anniversary shops will also feature special photo areas that vary by location, with decorations including oversized Pompompurin plushes created for the 30th anniversary celebration.

Those spending at least ¥2,200 (approx. $14 USD / £10 GBP) at participating Sanrio-operated stores, department store Sanrio sections or the Sanrio Online Shop can also receive a Pompompurin fan, whilst for purchases of ¥4,400 (approx. $28 USD / £20 GBP) or over, customers will receive a limited Pompompurin puffy-cover memo pad containing 60 sheets.

The “Pompompurin From Back Then Design Series” will officially launch on August 27 through Sanrio-operated stores across Japan, participating department store Sanrio sections, the Sanrio Online Shop and other selected retailers, with some stores beginning sales one day earlier on August 26.

The “Pompompurin 30th Anniversary Shops” will run from August 27 through September 13 at 37 selected Sanrio stores, with their exclusive collection also available through the Sanrio Online Shop within Japan from the same date.
