Based at Hiyoshi Shrine in Ōme, far west Tokyo, this is one of the longest continually running festivals in the Kantō region.

The very first Sakaki Matsuri was held in 1767.

As part of the ceremony, a large Sakaki tree is used as a mikoshi, or portable shrine.

It is tied with strips of paper, then carried and shaken rather vigorously on its way through the town to the shrine.

The main festival events take place on Sunday, with more mikoshi parades and festival stalls.

A special procession with the large Sakaki tree then departs from the shrine late on Sunday night.
