Pui Pui Molcar Director and WIT Studio Announce New Anime Candy Caries

Tomoki Misato, the director behind the hit stop-motion television series Pui Pui Molcar, is teaming up with Wit Studio to create a new original television anime titled Candy Caries.
The new series is scheduled to debut in April, and the team has already unveiled a teaser visual and a promotional video.
Misato and Wit Studio share credit for the original work, with Misato serving as the director for the anime at TORUKU from WIT STUDIO.
The new project is a slapstick comedy centered on Ame, a child with an intense love for sweets, and Caries, the personified tooth decay that resides in her mouth.

Caries lives a carefree existence inside Ame’s mouth, going so far as to call the child “Mama,” and Ame’s body is constantly at the mercy of Caries’ whims.
The collaboration follows the establishment of a stop-motion studio between Misato and Wit Studio in December 2020, with Candy Caries itself having been initially revealed as a stop-motion promotional video in 2021.

Misato provided insight into the unique animation style for the show, noting that he used plastic board and acrylic for the production.
He described the result as a semi three-dimensional animation that appears “flat like an illustration, but plump and thick.”
Misato’s previous series, Pui Pui Molcar, became a cultural phenomenon after its premiere in January 2021.

That series, which utilized stop-motion animated puppets made of wool felt, was his directorial debut on an animated television series.
Misato also wrote the script for the popular show and worked on storyboards alongside Hana Ono and Kei Sato.
Netflix later began streaming Pui Pui Molcar worldwide, and Misato was credited as chief supervisor for the 2024 Pui Pui Molcar the Movie: MOLMAX 3D CG film.

Misato’s recent work includes directing the My Melody & Kuromi stop-motion animation series for Netflix, which premiered in July 2025 and earned the Best Animation award at Singapore’s 2025 Asian Academy Creative Awards.
