The Pokémon Company has announced the cancellation of scheduled events across all Pokémon Center locations in Japan for the entirety of April 2026.

The retail chain typically hosts various community activities throughout the month, such as “Pokémon Greetings” and “Pokémon Card Game Classrooms”.

Store staff were advised on March 31 that almost all events have been removed from the calendar from April 1 to April 30, with the only exceptions being the “Pokémon Card Game City League” and the “Pokémon GO Department Pokémon Center Qualifying Tournament”.

The qualifying tournament for Pokémon GO will continue with significant changes to its operational structure to ensure safety, as broadcasts of match play within the venue have been suspended, and spectators are no longer permitted to enter the competition area.

Commemorative gifts previously planned for attendees have also been cancelled as part of these new safety measures.

These widespread cancellations follow a fatal incident that occurred on the evening of Thursday, March 26, at one of the franchise’s retail locations in Tokyo, Japan.

Tokyo Metropolitan Police are currently investigating a stabbing that took place at the Pokémon Center MEGA TOKYO inside the Sunshine City shopping complex in Ikebukuro.

Multiple emergency calls were made around 7:20 PM regarding a person acting violently within the store, where a female employee in her 20s was attacked and stabbed by a male suspect with a bladed weapon.

The victim was transported to a hospital for emergency treatment but was later pronounced dead, and the suspect died from his injuries shortly after turning the weapon on himself.

Investigations have since revealed that the attacker had been previously arrested for stalking the victim, leading to questions as to what can be done to increase safety measures for vulnerable women in Japan and whether police could have done more to prevent the attack.

The Pokémon Company has taken steps, such as the cancellation of events, to prioritize the mental and physical health of its staff whilst also enabling the company and its workers to cooperate fully with the ongoing police investigation.
