Pokémon Cafe embraces Mega Evolution with new Charizard curry
Japan’s Pokémon Cafe is set to introduce an exciting new menu featuring “Mega Evolution” Pokémon to coincide with the upcoming Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A video game.
Patrons at both the Nihonbashi (Tokyo) and Shinsaibashi (Osaka) locations can enjoy a “Charizard’s Flame Blast Curry Plate” alongside an AR experience, before finishing their meal with a dazzling “Mega Ampharos Sparkling Caramel Cream Cake”.
Mega Evolution, a powerful temporary transformation for Pokémon, was a popular feature introduced in the Pokémon X and Y games.
Its confirmed return in the upcoming Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A has rekindled excitement among the fanbase, making it a timely theme for the Pokémon Cafe.
These cafes offer unique Pokémon themed food, drinks, and merchandise that are exclusive to their respective locations.
New menu items have been created which take inspiration from the visual flair of Mega Evolution:
Mega Evolution! Charizard’s Flame Blast Curry Plate
This hearty curry plate is directly inspired by Charizard’s fiery Flamethrower attack.
It is served alongside an augmented reality (AR) experience themed around “Mega Evolution”.
Customers will receive a sparkly card featuring Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y.
By scanning a QR code on the card with their smartphone camera, they can activate an AR experience that simulates Charizard’s iconic Mega Evolution transformation right at their table.
The AR experience will detect the Mega Stone (Charizardite X or Y) depicted on your plate and show the appropriate evolution.
Plates will be set up with Charizardite X or Y at random.
The curry will be priced at 3,630 yen (approx. $25.11 USD / £18.53 GBP).
Mega Ampharos Sparkling Caramel Cream Cake
Inspired by the radiant Electric/Dragon-type Mega Ampharos, this visually appealing caramel cream cake layers rich caramel sauce and cream with pudding and sponge.
The “sparkling” elements are designed to evoke the light emanating from Mega Ampharos’s tail.
The cake will be priced at 2,640 yen (approx. $18.26 USD / £13.47 GBP).
As well as the new main dishes, the Pokémon Cafe is rolling out several Mega Evolution-themed giveaways.
For every food and dessert set ordered, customers will receive a two-layer sticker.
When the top sticker is peeled away, a sticker of the Pokémon in its Mega Evolved form is revealed.
There are 8 types in total, with designs chosen at random. This offer is valid for all food and sweets menus, while supplies last.
Every drink order will randomly come with an original coaster featuring a Mega Evolved Pokémon design. There are 8 types available, with designs chosen at random.
The popular “Selectable Pokémon Latte”, priced at 935 yen per coffee (approx. $6.46 USD / £4.77 GBP), will expand its art options to include eight Mega Evolution Pokémon, allowing customers to choose their favorite Mega Evolved design for their latte, cafe mocha, or caramel drink.
Mega Evolution will even be introduced to the kids menu, as the “Pokemon Cafe Kids Plate ~Pikachu Hamburger~” priced at 1,540 yen (approx. $10.65 USD / £7.86 GBP), will now include a coloring coaster featuring a Mega Evolution Pokémon design.
With the buzz around Mega Evolution’s return in Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A, these new offerings are expected to excite visitors to the Pokémon Café restaurants.
Visitors are strongly advised to make advance reservations through the official Pokémon Cafe website to secure a table if they want to experience these new dishes when the launch on Saturday, June 14th, 2025.
