The Pokémon franchise is officially returning to live-action with a brand-new drama based on Pokémon Unite, which has been revealed as one of the headline projects celebrating the game’s upcoming fifth anniversary.

The announcement represents the first new live-action Pokémon production since 2019’s Detective Pikachu, which proved that the long-running franchise could successfully make the transition from games and animation to the big screen.

Unlike Detective Pikachu, however, the new project will not adapt an existing Pokémon anime storyline or follow the adventures seen in the mainline Pokémon games.

Instead, the series will be inspired by Pokémon Unite, the free-to-play multiplayer online battle arena game developed by TiMi Studio Group and co-published by Tencent Games and The Pokémon Company.

Pokémon Unite first launched in 2021 and is preparing to celebrate its fifth anniversary later this year, with the live-action drama forming part of the milestone festivities.

According to the initial announcement, the production will tell a completely original story created specifically for the project rather than adapting existing material from the game.

That approach is perhaps unsurprising, as Pokémon Unite places its primary emphasis on competitive multiplayer battles and esports competition instead of traditional character-driven storytelling.

Many details about the drama remain under wraps, including whether the story will take place within the world of Pokémon Unite itself or instead follow real-world players competing in the game.

If the latter approach is chosen, Pokémon may appear primarily through in-game battle sequences rather than interacting directly with the live-action cast.

The production has also been described as a short-form drama, which could be anything from a promotional style commemorative anniversary video to a broader series with short episodes.

Casting information, story details, and additional production announcements will be revealed at a later date as development continues.

The announcement has already sparked mixed reactions across the online Pokémon community, with some fans expressing excitement about the fresh concept while others questioned whether development resources would be better spent improving Pokémon Unite itself.

Some players also joked that the series should feature the game’s well-known microtransactions, while others said they were eager to learn who would be cast in the leading roles.

An official premiere date has not yet been set, although Pokémon Unite’s fifth anniversary is set to take place on September 22, 2026, so more information is likely to be revealed in the run-up.
