Ōkunitama Shrine Autumn Festival

Ōkunitama Shrine Autumn Festival

The Ōkunitama Shrine Autumn Festival is a historic and culturally rich event held in Fuchu City, Tokyo.

This festival is also famously known as the Kuri Matsuri, or Chestnut Festival.

Ōkunitama Shrine Autumn Festival 1

The name originated during the Edo period because the Musashino region was renowned for its high-quality chestnuts, which were even presented to the Tokugawa clan.

Ōkunitama Shrine Autumn Festival 5

The chestnut harvest season overlapped with the timing of the shrine’s sacred kagura dance performances, and so the festival became known by its popular name.

One of the main features of the festival is the approximately 260 paper lanterns that illuminate the shrine grounds, creating a fantastic atmosphere in the evening.
