New competitive Gundam Card Game tournament announced and prizes revealed

A new series of competitive events for the Gundam Card Game will target intermediate to advanced players.

Dubbed the “Newtype Challenge”, these events will offer an opportunity for seasoned card battlers to test their skills in a tournament setting, offering the chance to win exclusive cards as prizes.

The first installment, “2025 MISSION 1”, is scheduled to take place in September 2025, with specific dates and participating Expert Shops across Japan to be announced later.

The Gundam Card Game is Bandai’s latest initiative to consolidate the expansive Gundam universe into a single, global trading card game.

With its upcoming launch in July and the “Newtype Rising” booster pack, the game has aimed to build a robust player base by offering accessible entry points.

The “Newtype Challenge” represents a progression in this strategy, catering to players who have grasped the basic mechanics and are now seeking more rigorous competitive engagement.

The name “Newtype” itself is a significant term in the Gundam lore, referring to naturally gifted individuals with enhanced spatial awareness and intuition.

In the anime series, Newtypes often become ace pilots, which is a fitting metaphor for skilled TCG players.

These events will be hosted at designated “Gundam Card Game Expert Shops” across Japan, ensuring a dedicated and challenging environment for competitive play.

The format will typically be Swiss or Tournament style, though specific details regarding the format and number of matches may be adjusted on the day by individual stores based on participation.

Newtype Challenge Details

Event Schedule:
- “2025 MISSION1” is planned for September 2025.
- Specific dates for this and subsequent missions will be announced later.
Capacity:
- Each participating store will accommodate up to 32 players.
- In case of oversubscription, a lottery system will be used for selection.
- Even if the capacity isn’t met or cancellations occur, only participants who applied before the cut-off date will be able to join.
Participating Stores & Application Period:
- The list of participating Expert Shops and the application period for “2025 MISSION1” will be announced at a later date.

The “Newtype Challenge” will reward participants with exclusive cards that are highly desirable for both collectors and competitive players, featuring characters and mobile suits from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, one of the most recent and popular Gundam series.

Championship Prize

The winner of each event will receive a special GD01-067 Gundam Aerial Rebuild card based on the mobile suit of Suletta Mercury from Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.

Top 8 Prize

Players who reach the top 8 will be awarded an exclusive ST01-011 Suletta Mercury parallel card.

Suletta Mercury is the pilot of Gundam Aerial and the main protagonist of the Witch from Mercury series.

Participation Prize

All participants, regardless of their performance, will receive a GD01-118 Overflowing Love parallel card at the end of the event.

Participation in the “Newtype Challenge” requires advance application through the BANDAI TCG+ mobile application. Players must download the app and follow its instructions to submit their applications.

The introduction of the “Newtype Challenge” will provide experienced players with a dedicated platform to showcase their skills and earn exclusive rewards.

BANDAI will no doubt hope that as the “Newtype Challenge” events expand with additional “missions” that help promote the game while keeping players engaged.
