Neon Genesis Evangelion gets an official whisky collection for its 30th anniversary

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Neon Genesis Evangelion, the specialist whisky site WHISKY MEW has announced a new collection of three limited-edition labeled whiskies.
Neon Genesis Evangelion first aired in 1995, and the original anime, created by Hideaki Anno, became a massive social phenomenon that influenced media far beyond the world of animation.

It remains one of Japan’s most representative animated works, with a global fanbase that has continued through its Rebuild theatrical film series.

The new 30th-anniversary release features three distinct Scotch whiskies, all specially selected by renowned whisky critic Hideo Yamaoka, with each bottle paired with one of the series’ iconic Evangelion units.

Here is the full product lineup:
- Evangelion Unit-01 Label / Springbank 2000
- Price: 154,000 yen (approx. $1000.23 USD / £761.53 GBP)
- Size: 700ml

This is a 23-year-old (40.7% ABV) lightly peated Springbank 2000, described as a “superb bottle” with an “old Springbank atmosphere.”

It has a soft, fruity aroma and a slightly smoky, malty, berry-sweet flavor.
A total of 186 bottles have been produced.
- Evangelion Unit-02 Label / Glen Elgin 2009
- Price: 19,800 yen (approx. $128.60 USD / £97.91 GBP)
- Size: 700ml

A 14-year-old (49.4% ABV) whisky from the Glen Elgin distillery, a key malt supplier for White Horse blended whisky.

Matured in American oak refill sherry casks, it has a characteristic “dried shiitake mushroom” aroma, reminiscent of an old blended whisky.
A total of 316 bottles have been produced.
- Evangelion Unit-00 Label / Secret Speyside 2007
- Price: 18,700 yen (approx. $121.46 USD / £92.48 GBP)
- Size: 700ml

A 16-year-old (53% ABV) whisky from an undisclosed “Secret Speyside” distillery, noted for producing a peaty whisky that is rare for the region.

It is described as a “big-bodied whisky” with an aroma of toffee and a fruity, slightly waxy flavor.
A total of 323 bottles have been produced.
The whiskies will be sold via an online lottery on the WHISKY MEW website.

The lottery application period will run from 12:00 PM (JST) on November 7 until 11:59 PM (JST) on November 17, 2025.
Applicants can apply for single bottles, a two-bottle set (Unit-02 and Unit-00), or a complete three-bottle set.
