Mayumi Tanaka Confirmed as Luffy's Voice Actor for Netflix's One Piece Remake

Netflix has confirmed that veteran voice actress Mayumi Tanaka will continue to voice Monkey D. Luffy in the upcoming anime series The One Piece, preserving one of the franchise’s most iconic performances for a new generation of fans.

The announcement was made during the “Next on Netflix Animation” presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, where the streaming platform also debuted the series’ first teaser trailer and a selection of preview images.

The One Piece is a brand-new adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s globally acclaimed manga that retells the story from the beginning, starting with the East Blue Saga.

Produced by WIT STUDIO under the direction of Masashi Koizuka, best known for his work on Attack on Titan, the new series aims to recreate the Straw Hat Pirates’ earliest adventures with modern animation while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original manga.

The teaser opens by announcing the dawn of the Great Pirate Era before introducing a young Luffy dreaming of life at sea alongside his childhood hero, Red-Haired Shanks.

As the footage progresses, viewers are given a first glimpse of Luffy setting sail, encountering the companions who will eventually form the Straw Hat Pirates, and embarking on the legendary adventure that has captivated fans around the world for decades.

The newly revealed footage highlights the ambitious visual quality being delivered by WIT STUDIO, combining nostalgic moments from the original story with an entirely fresh presentation designed for both longtime followers and newcomers alike.

The teaser concludes with the unmistakable voice of Mayumi Tanaka, whose performance as Luffy has become inseparable from the character throughout the long-running television anime and Japanese versions of the live-action adaptation.

Tanaka said she was delighted to once again play Luffy in an entirely new series, admitting that beginning another version of the adventure at this stage of her career initially made her slightly nervous.

She explained that the experience ultimately allowed her to discover new aspects of the character and approach the role with a fresh perspective, adding that the recording sessions were tremendously enjoyable and expressing her hope that audiences around the world will embrace the new adaptation.

Director Masashi Koizuka praised the dedication of the voice cast, explaining that their passionate performances continually inspire the animation team to give more than their full effort on every episode.

Koizuka also reflected on reading the original manga when it first began serialization, recalling the same excitement and anticipation that Luffy himself experiences before setting sail into the unknown.

He emphasized that the production team’s primary goal is to faithfully adapt the story created by Eiichiro Oda while encouraging audiences to experience One Piece from the very beginning through a completely new interpretation.

Netflix has confirmed that The One Piece is scheduled to begin streaming worldwide in February 2027, with Mayumi Tanaka once again leading the adventure as Monkey D. Luffy.
